May is the last comfortable month in the Moroccan interior before summer takes over. Marrakech runs at about 29°C – hot but still walkable – the High Atlas trekking season opens as the snow retreats off the passes, the Valley of Roses harvests its damask crop, and in 2027 Eid al-Adha falls around 17 May, the biggest holiday of the Moroccan year.
Eid al-Adha, around 17 May 2027
Eid al-Adha is expected around 17 May 2027 (confirmed locally by moon sighting, so it may shift a day). It is a bigger deal in Morocco than Eid al-Fitr, and it is the one Moroccan holiday that genuinely affects a trip:
- Two or more days of near-total closure. Souks, shops, many restaurants and most sites shut. Medinas that never stop simply stop.
- It is a domestic travel peak. Trains, CTM and Supratours buses and shared taxis fill days ahead as the country goes home to family. Book long-distance transport well in advance.
- Every family slaughters a sheep at home on the first morning. In the medinas it is visible and unavoidable, and squeamish travellers should plan the day accordingly – a day trip out of the city, the coast, or the mountains.
- Riads and hotels stay open and generally serve food, but staffing thins and some restaurants stay closed for three or four days.
The days either side are normal, and the country is warm and generous during it. Just do not schedule an ambitious sightseeing day on the Eid itself.
The rose harvest
The Valley of Roses around Kelaa M’Gouna, on the road between Ouarzazate and the Dades Gorge, harvests its damask roses in late April and May, and holds a rose festival – usually the second week of May, with dates announced each year. The hedgerows along the M’Goun river are cut at dawn, and the whole valley smells of it.
It pairs naturally with a Dades and Todra gorge route, or with the drive out to Merzouga.

May is when the trekking season properly starts. Snow clears off the lower passes, the Imlil valley and the Toubkal refuges reopen in earnest, and the wildflowers come out across the Ait Bougmez. Toubkal itself can still hold snow near the summit into May, and a guide is mandatory on the mountain by Moroccan regulation – ask specifically what conditions are like the week you go.
Weather by region
- Marrakech and the interior – about 29°C by day, 14°C at night. Hot in the afternoon, excellent mornings and evenings. Fes is similar.
- Essaouira and the Atlantic – around 21°C and windy; the coast is now noticeably cooler than the interior, which is the whole point of it.
- Agadir – about 24°C, the easiest beach month before the crowds.
- Chefchaouen and the north – around 26°C and finally dry; the best month of the year up there.
- The Sahara – the last workable month. Merzouga and Zagora reach the mid-30s by day; go for the earliest possible camel departure and expect a cold-ish night still.
- The High Atlas – warm valleys, snow lingering high.
The chergui, the hot Saharan wind, can arrive from May onwards and add ten degrees to Marrakech for two or three days at a time.
