June is the month the Moroccan map inverts. Marrakech climbs to about 34°C and the Sahara passes 40°C, so the interior stops being the obvious plan – while the Atlantic coast sits in the low twenties, the High Atlas reaches its best trekking conditions of the year, and Essaouira hosts the Gnaoua festival on the beach.
Go coastal or go high
This is the first month where where you go matters more than when. The three workable strategies:
- The Atlantic coast. Essaouira at about 22°C, Agadir at 25°C, Asilah and Oualidia cooler still. The alizés – the Atlantic trade winds – blow hard through the summer, which is why Essaouira is a kitesurfing town and why you will want a jacket at dinner in June.
- The High Atlas. June is the best trekking month of the Moroccan year: the snow has gone off Toubkal, the valleys are green, the rivers are still running from the melt, and Imlil is 10°C cooler than Marrakech an hour away. A guide is mandatory on Toubkal under Moroccan regulation.
- The interior, but rearranged. Marrakech and Fes are still entirely doable if you move like a local: out by 8am, indoors or in a riad pool from noon to five, back out for the evening. The medinas come alive after dark and stay that way.
What does not work in June is the desert. Merzouga and Zagora run past 40°C, the camel treks shorten or stop, and it is not a comfortable overnight. Leave the Sahara for October to April.
The festivals
June is the fullest music month of the Moroccan calendar. Dates are announced annually, so treat these as the usual window rather than fixed:
- Gnaoua and World Music Festival, Essaouira – usually the last weekend of June. Largely free, staged in Place Moulay Hassan and on the beach, and the reason Essaouira books out for that week. Gnaoua is Morocco’s own trance music, descended from sub-Saharan Africa, and this is where it meets jazz and everything else.
- Mawazine, Rabat – usually late June. One of the largest festivals in the world by attendance, with international headliners and a very large free stage.
- Jazzablanca, Casablanca – usually June or early July.
If Essaouira is on your itinerary at all, check the Gnaoua dates before booking a riad. It is the one week of the year when the town has no rooms left.

- Fes and Meknes – similar, sometimes hotter; the inland north has no sea to soften it.
- Essaouira – around 22°C, windy, often a grey marine layer in the morning that burns off by midday.
- Agadir and Taghazout – about 25°C, sunny, small summer surf that suits beginners.
- Chefchaouen and Tangier – around 30°C and finally dry; the north is at its best.
- The High Atlas – warm days, cool nights, clear passes.
- The Sahara – past 40°C. Not the month.
Prices and crowds

What to pack
Loose, covering, light-coloured clothes for the interior – covering up genuinely keeps you cooler in dry heat – a real sun hat, a windproof layer for the Atlantic, and boots plus a warm layer if you are heading into the Atlas. See the Morocco packing list.
