September is the release. The diaspora return ends in the first days of the month and the coast empties, the interior slides from about 35°C at the start to the low thirties by the end, the High Atlas is at its clearest, and by the final week the Sahara becomes workable again. It is the best-value good-weather month in the Moroccan year.
The month splits in two
Early and late September are genuinely different trips:
- The first ten days still feel like August. The interior is hot, the coast is busy with the tail of Operation Marhaba, and ferries and northern roads are still heavy. Coastal rates stay high.
- From mid-September everything loosens. Moroccan schools go back, the beaches empty, coastal prices fall, and the interior becomes comfortable in the mornings and evenings.
- The last week is when Merzouga and Zagora start being pleasant again and the desert camps fill their calendars for the autumn.
If you have any flexibility, book the second half.
Imilchil and the moussems
The Imilchil Marriage Moussem, held by the Ait Hdiddou in the High Atlas, usually falls in September, with dates announced annually. It is part livestock fair, part regional market and part betrothal gathering, and it is the most photographed traditional festival in Morocco – which also means it now carries a degree of staging for visitors. Getting there is a long mountain drive from Midelt or the Dades; go with a guide or a booked tour.
The Moussem of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun near Meknes also falls in late August or September, and is the biggest event of that town’s year.
Harvest season

September is when Morocco starts bringing things in: grapes and figs around Meknes and the Zerhoun hills, olives from late in the month, and the date harvest beginning in the southern oases around Erfoud and the Draa valley, which runs on into October. Roadside stalls through the Ziz and Draa valleys are at their best.
Weather by region
- Marrakech – about 35°C early in the month, falling to the low thirties by the end; nights around 20°C. Dry throughout.
- Fes and Meknes – similar, with cooler evenings.
- Essaouira – around 23°C; the wind eases from September and the town is arguably better now than in midsummer.
- Agadir and Taghazout – about 28°C with warm water; the surf begins to build late in the month.
- Tangier and the north – around 29°C, still dry; the first rain usually arrives in October.
- The High Atlas – excellent, with stable weather and clear views; one of the two best trekking months.
- The Sahara – hot until roughly the third week, then increasingly good.
Prices and crowds
