June is Vietnam’s hottest month in the north and the start of its domestic summer. Hanoi averages 34°C by day and stays near 27°C at night, the south is in full rainy season, and every Vietnamese school is on holiday – which means the beaches at Da Nang, Nha Trang and Phu Quoc are busy with domestic travellers even though foreign visitor numbers are at their annual low.
The heat is the headline
Hanoi in June runs around 34°C by day, 27°C at night, with roughly 220 mm of rain across sixteen days. The nights are the part people underestimate: it does not cool down, and humidity stays high after dark. Hue and the central lowlands are frequently hotter still, with the dry Lao wind pushing temperatures past 38°C.
How to make it work:
- Sightsee before 09:00 and after 16:00. The middle of the day is for shade, air conditioning and long lunches.
- Choose the coast or the mountains over inland cities. Da Nang, Nha Trang, Sapa, Dalat and Ha Giang are all more comfortable than Hanoi or Hue.
- Drink far more than feels necessary and take the salt back with you – Vietnamese food does this for you.

- Hanoi and the north – the hottest month: about 34°C by day, 27°C at night, 220 mm of rain over sixteen days, arriving as heavy late-afternoon storms.
- Sapa, Ha Giang and the north-west – markedly cooler, green and terraced. The best place in northern Vietnam in June.
- Hue and the central lowlands – dry and often the hottest place in the country, regularly above 35°C.
- Da Nang, Hoi An and Nha Trang – dry season, hot and sunny, calm sea. Excellent beach conditions and the domestic peak.
- Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong – rainy season, with a heavy hour most afternoons and a hot, humid rest of the day.
- Phu Quoc – wet season, with the west coast exposed to the south-west monsoon; still swimmable between showers.

The domestic summer peak
Vietnamese schools break for the summer at the end of May, and June to early August is the domestic holiday season. What that changes:
- Beach destinations fill up. Nha Trang, Da Nang, Quy Nhon, Phu Quoc and Vung Tau are busy at weekends, with domestic rather than foreign crowds.
- Domestic flights are expensive at weekends and much cheaper midweek. Shift your internal legs to Tuesday to Thursday and the difference is substantial.
- Cities are quiet. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have very few foreign visitors in June – museums, temples and old quarters are as empty as they get.
Where June works best
Two answers. The central coast if you want beach: Da Nang and Hoi An are dry, hot and reliable, and Hoi An’s old town is far more pleasant in the early morning and evening than at midday. And the northern mountains if you want to escape the heat: Sapa, Mu Cang Chai, Ha Giang and Dalat all sit several degrees cooler, with the terraces green and full.
The one thing June does not do well is the far north’s big trekking days at midday, and multi-day motorbike loops in heavy rain. Ride early, stop at noon.
Prices and crowds
A split market. Foreign visitor numbers are at their yearly low, so international-facing hotels in Hanoi, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City discount. Domestic-facing beach resorts do the opposite and charge their summer rates, especially at weekends. Travelling midweek is the single biggest saving available in June.
