April is the best-value month in Peru and most people miss it. Cusco’s rainfall collapses from 97 mm in March to about 33 mm, the Andes are still green from the wet season, the trails are open and dry enough – and none of the June-to-August crowds or prices have arrived yet.
The weather, precisely
The number that matters is the rainfall drop. April is the first genuinely trekkable month of the year, and it comes with a landscape the dry season will slowly bleach brown by July. You get green mountains and dry trails in the same month, which is not true of any other.
On the coast the reverse is starting: the garúa fog begins creeping back over Lima in April, and the city turns greyer through May.
Why April is underrated
- Inca Trail permits are available. June, July and August sell out months in advance; April rarely does. Same trail, fewer people on it.
- Machu Picchu is green and comparatively quiet. Timed entry and circuit tickets are still required year-round.
- Prices sit below peak across Cusco, the Sacred Valley and the trains.
- The Sacred Valley is at its most photogenic – terraces green, rivers full, skies clearing.
- Rainbow Mountain becomes reliably accessible as the wet season ends, though it is a 5,000 m day trip and needs real acclimatisation first.

April is a shoulder month, which means it is genuinely variable. Late-season showers still happen in the first half, some high passes can be muddy, and a bad week will feel like March. The second half of April is the safer bet if you have a choice.
The rest of the country
- Lima – still pleasant at 23°C but the grey is returning. April is the last comfortable coastal month before winter.
- The Amazon – still high water, hot and humid, with strong boat-based wildlife viewing.
- Lake Titicaca – clearing skies, cold nights, and Puno at 3,800 m needs the same acclimatisation respect as Cusco.
Altitude
Cusco is about 3,400 m; Rainbow Mountain tops 5,000 m. Altitude sickness is common and unrelated to fitness. Arrive gently, rest the first day, drink plenty of water, moderate alcohol, and consider sleeping lower in the Sacred Valley before Cusco. Symptoms that worsen mean descending. Speak to a doctor or travel clinic before you travel, especially with a heart or lung condition or if pregnant.
