February is the coldest month in Japan and one of the most rewarding. The Sapporo Snow Festival runs 4–11 February 2027, the ski season is still at depth, the plum blossom opens in the west while the cherry trees are still bare, and the country is at its emptiest of foreign visitors. Tokyo sits around 11°C by day with under 60 mm of rain – cold, but bright and dry.
Sapporo Snow Festival, 4–11 February 2027
Japan’s biggest winter event runs for eight days from Thursday 4 February to Thursday 11 February 2027 – ending on National Foundation Day – across three sites in Sapporo:
- Odori Park – the main site, a kilometre of monumental snow sculptures, some the size of buildings, lit after dark.
- Susukino – ice sculptures in the nightlife district, and the best of the two for atmosphere in the evening.
- Tsudome – the family site, with slides and snow activities, a short ride from the centre.
Two warnings worth taking seriously. Sapporo hotels book out months ahead for these dates and prices multiply – reserve as early as you can or stay in Otaru or Chitose and commute. And it is genuinely cold: daytime temperatures in Sapporo sit below freezing, and the sculptures are outdoors.
Weather: the coldest month, and still dry
- Tokyo – about 11°C by day and 2°C at night, with roughly 57 mm of rain across five days. Cold, clear and dry; Fuji is visible from the city on most bright mornings.
- Kyoto and Osaka – around 9°C by day and close to freezing at night. Kyoto’s temples under a dusting of snow are one of the great sights in Japan, and entirely a matter of luck.
- The Japan Sea coast – Kanazawa, Takayama and Shirakawa-go under deep snow; Shirakawa-go’s illuminated evenings are ticketed and sell out.
- Hokkaido – the coldest part of the country, and the best snow.
- Okinawa – around 20°C, and the first cherry blossom in Japan opens there in late January and February, a different and earlier species than the mainland’s.
Plum blossom, not cherry blossom
The mainland cherry season does not start until late March, but February is ume season – plum blossom, which Japanese aesthetics rate nearly as highly and which smells far better. Kyoto’s Kitano Tenmangu, Tokyo’s Yushima Tenjin and Mito’s Kairakuen all hold plum festivals through February and into March.
If you came expecting sakura, this is the consolation, and it is a good one: the same aesthetic, a fraction of the crowds, and no hotel surcharge.
Setsubun and the February holidays
- Wednesday 3 February 2027 – Setsubun. The eve of spring in the old calendar, marked by throwing roasted soybeans to drive out demons, at home and in big public ceremonies at temples such as Senso-ji in Tokyo and Yoshida Shrine in Kyoto. Not a public holiday.
- Thursday 11 February – National Foundation Day, a public holiday, and the last day of the Sapporo Snow Festival.
- Tuesday 23 February – the Emperor’s Birthday, a public holiday since the accession in 2019.
None of these creates the kind of country-wide travel rush that New Year or Golden Week do, so February stays comfortable.
Skiing in February
Still excellent, and marginally more reliable than January in the Japan Alps. The trade-off is the Japanese school holidays and the Snow Festival week, which push Hokkaido prices up for the first half of the month. Nagano – Hakuba, Nozawa Onsen, Shiga Kogen – is cheaper, easier to reach from Tokyo by shinkansen, and just as snowy.
Prices and crowds
February is, with late January, the quietest month for foreign visitors and among the cheapest for flights and city hotels. The exceptions are concentrated: Sapporo during the Snow Festival, ski towns during the Japanese school break, and anywhere near Shirakawa-go on an illumination night.

What to pack
Winter clothing, properly. Thermals, a windproof outer layer, gloves and a hat are not optional in Hokkaido, and Kyoto in February is colder than the numbers suggest because buildings and temples are unheated. Shoes that come off easily still matter – you will take them off several times a day. See the Japan packing list.
