When should you travel? We analyzed the ideal window, months to avoid, peak-crowd period and climate for 26 of the world’s most-visited destinations (from the Packzup Best Time to Visit Index) to rank the best months to travel — and the ones to skip. The data upends the summer-holiday habit.
- September is the world’s single best month to travel — the ideal season for 14 of the 26 top destinations. May, June and October follow closely (13 each).
- July and August — the most popular months — are the worst. Only 6 of 26 destinations are at their best, yet they are among the most crowded (11 of 26) and August is the single most-avoided month (10 destinations list it as a month to skip).
- 20 of 26 destinations’ ideal window excludes July and August entirely — the shoulder seasons (Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct) are the real sweet spot for good weather with far smaller crowds.
- December is actually the most crowded month (13 of 26) — but unlike mid-summer its crowds line up with genuine peak season, so they buy good weather rather than waste it.

The summer trap: why July–August is a mistake
The months most travelers book are the ones the data says to skip. In July and August only 6 of 26 destinations are at their best, yet 11 hit peak crowds — the worst ratio of the year (crowded vs. ideal, of 26):
December is the single most crowded month (13 of 26) — driven by the holidays and the Southern-Hemisphere and tropical high season — but those crowds coincide with the genuine best time for Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam), the Maldives, New Zealand, Mexico’s Caribbean coast, India and Egypt, so unlike mid-summer the crowds are the price of peak conditions.
