April is when the Indian plains become genuinely hard. Delhi averages 36°C by day and Rajasthan pushes past 40°C, the Taj Mahal at midday is an endurance test, and foreign visitor numbers collapse. What you get in return is the best wildlife viewing of the year, the hill stations at their finest, and prices that fall through the floor everywhere except the mountains.
The heat, and how to plan around it
This is not a detail to work around – it is the organising fact of the month. Northern India in April regularly exceeds 40°C and the pre-monsoon loo, a hot dry wind, blows across the plains in the afternoons.
The workable structure:
- Sightsee from opening until about 10:30. Forts, temples and monuments are all better at dawn anyway.
- Stay indoors from 11:00 to 17:00. This is what Indian cities do; museums, cafes and hotel pools exist for it.
- Drink far more than feels necessary, and take salt with it – nimbu pani with salt is the local answer and it works.
- Do not walk long distances at midday, and treat heat exhaustion as a real risk, not a theoretical one.
Weather by region
- Delhi and the north – about 36°C by day and 21°C at night, dry, with very little rain.
- Rajasthan – the hottest part of the country, regularly above 40°C. The desert is a dawn-and-dusk proposition only.
- Goa and the Konkan – hot and humid, out of season, with most shacks closed and prices at their lowest.
- Kerala and the south – hot and humid, building towards the monsoon; the hill stations are the answer.
- Central India – very hot and very dry, and the best tiger sightings of the year.
- The Himalaya – the good news: foothills and mid-hills are at their best, and the high passes to Ladakh usually reopen from late April or May.

April and May are the peak of the Indian safari year. The forest has no leaf cover, the water has gone everywhere except a few pools, and animals must come to them – so sightings at Ranthambore, Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Tadoba and Pench are at their annual best.
The cost is that a morning drive in an open jeep at 40°C is genuinely uncomfortable, and afternoon drives more so. Choose lodges with pools and air conditioning, do the dawn slot, and accept the middle of the day as lost. Most parks close for the monsoon around the end of June, so April and May are also the last reliable months.
Hill stations: the Indian answer to April
This is the month domestic tourism moves uphill, and the hill stations are at their best before the summer school holidays fill them:
- Himachal – Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala and the Spiti approach roads beginning to open.
- Uttarakhand – Mussoorie, Nainital and Rishikesh, with the white-water season running.
- Sikkim and Darjeeling – the end of rhododendron season and clear mountain mornings.
- The Western Ghats – Munnar, Ooty, Kodaikanal and Coorg, ten degrees cooler than the plains below.
- Kashmir – the tulip garden in Srinagar opens for a few weeks in spring, and the valley is at its most beautiful.
Festivals
- Ram Navami, in mid-April, marking Rama’s birth; processions at Ayodhya and across the north.
- Baisakhi, 13 or 14 April – the Punjabi harvest festival and the Sikh new year, at its most spectacular at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. It is also Vishu in Kerala, Poila Boishakh in Bengal and Puthandu in Tamil Nadu – a cluster of regional new years in the same few days.
- Thrissur Pooram in Kerala, usually late April or early May – caparisoned elephants, percussion ensembles and a fireworks contest; one of the great sights of southern India.
Prices and crowds
The plains are at their annual low: Delhi, Agra, Rajasthan and Goa all discount heavily, and the famous monuments are quiet. The hill stations invert this and fill with Indian families from late April. It is one of the cheapest months to see the Golden Triangle, if you can take the temperature.
