April is the changeover month. The aurora season ends, the ice caves close, the puffins arrive, and Iceland celebrates the First Day of Summer on Thursday 22 April 2027 while there is still snow on the ground. Daylight runs from thirteen and a half hours at the start of the month to nearly sixteen at the end, and prices sit below everything from May onward.
The light, and what it ends
- 1 April 2027 – sunrise 06:49, sunset 20:17. 13 hours 29 minutes.
- 15 April – sunrise 05:59, sunset 20:59. 15 hours 1 minute.
- 30 April – approaching seventeen hours.
This is what ends the aurora season. The lights are still there, but by mid-April the sky no longer gets properly dark, and from the last week of the month it effectively does not get dark at all. Early April still offers a genuine chance on a clear night; late April does not. If the northern lights are the reason for your trip, book March or wait for late September.
What else closes, and what opens
April is the seam between two completely different Icelands:
- Natural ice caves close – the Vatnajokull caves shut somewhere between mid-March and early April as meltwater destabilises them. The Katla cave and the manmade ice tunnels stay open year-round.
- Studded tyres come off – legal only to 15 April, after which using them carries a fine per tyre.
- Puffins return – the first birds come ashore from around mid-April, though the colonies are properly busy from May to early August.
- Whale watching improves sharply – sailings increase from Reykjavik, Husavik and Akureyri as the season builds.
- Highland F-roads stay shut. They open between mid-June and early July. Nothing you do in April changes that.
Sumardagurinn fyrsti: the First Day of Summer
On the first Thursday after 18 April – which in 2027 is Thursday 22 April – Iceland celebrates Sumardagurinn fyrsti, the first day of summer, as a national public holiday. It is a survival from the old Norse calendar, which had only two seasons, and it is celebrated with parades, children’s events and gifts, frequently in sleet.
The tradition worth knowing: if summer and winter “freeze together” – if the night before the first day of summer drops below freezing – the summer is supposed to be a good one. Expect shops and services to run holiday hours on the day.
Weather, and the honest warning
Reykjavik averages a high near 6°C and a low near 1–2°C, with precipitation on about 12 days – drier than the winter months. But April in Iceland is not spring in the European sense: snow, sleet and gales are all normal, particularly in the north and in the first half of the month.
Keep checking road.is, safetravel.is and vedur.is. Mountain passes in the north and east close regularly through April, and a spring storm can shut a road as effectively as a January one.
What an April itinerary can actually cover
With fifteen hours of light and no highland access, April suits the classic loop: Reykjavik, the Golden Circle, the South Coast to Jokulsarlon and Diamond Beach, and Snaefellsnes. The full Ring Road becomes genuinely viable in April for the first time, provided you keep a spare day and do not book a tight flight on the last morning.
What it does not suit: the highlands, Landmannalaugar, the Westfjords (where many roads and services open in June), and anything requiring a clear night sky in the second half of the month.
Prices

Volcanic activity
