The Rental-Car and Road Mistakes That Catch First-Timers
Most Iceland trips run on a rental car, and that is where the costliest mistakes happen. The big one is F-roads. The F stands for fjallvegur, or mountain road, and these Highland routes legally require a 4WD vehicle. Drive one in a 2WD car and you instantly void your insurance, often with a river crossing and no help for miles. Just as common is the gravel surprise: many policies exclude gravel chips, sand and ash damage, undercarriage damage and river crossings, and loose stones turn up even in paved-route car parks and pull-offs. Read what your coverage actually excludes before you sign, rather than assuming you are fully protected.
Weather is the other trap. From roughly October through April, wind, ice and snow can close roads with little warning. The Icelandic Met Office and road authority update conditions daily, so check them the morning you drive, not the night before. And fuel discipline matters more than people expect, since the Highlands have very few stations; fill up before any long stretch.
A short pre-drive checklist keeps you out of trouble:
- Match the car to the route. Highland and many interior routes need 4WD; the paved Ring Road and Golden Circle do not.
- Confirm gravel, sand-and-ash and windblown-door cover, or budget for the excess.
- Refuel whenever a station appears before heading inland, and never attempt a river crossing in a 2WD.
