Is Thailand Safe to Visit? The Honest Briefing

Thailand is one of the safest tourist destinations in Southeast Asia. Here’s what to know about real risks and how to avoid them.

Crime levels

Violent crime against tourists is rare. Petty theft (bag-snatching, scams) happens in tourist zones, Khao San Road, Patong Beach, Pattaya. Common sense + crossbody bags + not flashing valuables solve 95%.

Scam awareness

Tuk-tuk ‘temple is closed today’ scam (it’s not — gem store kickback). Jet-ski damage scams in Phuket (pre-photo the ski, only use reputable operators). Taxi ‘meter broken’ (use Grab instead). ‘Free’ tour drops you at commission shops.

Health risks

Tap water unsafe: drink bottled. Ice in established restaurants is usually fine. Dengue + Zika in monsoon season. Use repellent. Get hepatitis A + typhoid vaccines. Strict rabies precautions, don’t touch street dogs or monkeys.

Drug laws

Thailand decriminalized marijuana but other drugs carry severe penalties (long prison sentences, even death). Don’t accept anything from strangers. Don’t take photos of drug paraphernalia at festivals.

Cultural safety

Respect the monarchy absolutely — lèse-majesté laws are enforced. Cover shoulders + knees at temples. Don’t touch heads or point feet. Smile a lot: confrontation is taboo, ask politely.

Pro tip: Travel insurance with motorbike coverage is essential. Most tourist injuries are scooter accidents in Phuket + Koh Samui. Most policies require an international motorcycle license to honor claims.
