August is the month Spain goes on holiday, and it changes the country. Madrid empties, family restaurants and small shops close for weeks, and the entire population moves to the coast. It is the most expensive and most crowded month on the beaches, the hottest inland, and it holds two of the strangest events in Europe: La Tomatina on Wednesday 25 August 2027 and the Descenso del Sella in Asturias.
Spain closes and moves to the sea
The phenomenon is real and catches visitors out. Through August, and especially in the middle two weeks:
- Madrid and Barcelona lose their residents. Neighbourhood bars, family restaurants and independent shops post cerrado por vacaciones signs and shut for two to four weeks.
- The coast and the islands are full at maximum prices, with Spanish rather than foreign holidaymakers driving most of it.
- Inland cities are cheap and quiet – Madrid in August is one of the best-value city breaks in Europe, if you can handle 33°C.
- 15 August – the Asunción, a national public holiday falling on a Sunday in 2027, is the peak weekend of the Spanish summer.
La Tomatina – Wednesday 25 August 2027
Held on the last Wednesday of August, which is 25 August in 2027, in the small town of Buñol near Valencia. For one hour from around 11:00, some 20,000 people throw more than a hundred tonnes of overripe tomatoes at each other.
Practical points: tickets are required and capped, and they sell out; the town is tiny and reachable by train from Valencia; wear clothes and shoes you will throw away, and goggles; tomatoes must be squashed before throwing and the fight stops on the second signal. Buy tickets from the official Buñol channel rather than a reseller.
Weather
- Madrid and the interior – around 33°C by day and 21°C at night, dry, with about 12 mm of rain. Heatwaves are common.
- Andalucía – the hottest, with Seville and Córdoba regularly at or above 38°C.
- Barcelona and the Mediterranean – about 29°C, humid, with the sea at its warmest around 26°C. August brings the year’s first real storms to the coast, at roughly 51 mm.
- The Atlantic north – 23–26°C, green and far more comfortable; this is where Spaniards from the interior go.
- The Canaries – around 28°C, moderated by the trade winds, and less oppressive than the mainland south.
The August festivals
- Semana Grande – Bilbao’s Aste Nagusia and San Sebastián’s Aste Nagusia, both in mid-August, with fireworks competitions, concerts and street parties.
- Descenso Internacional del Sella, Asturias – an international canoe descent from Arriondas to Ribadesella on the first Saturday after 2 August, followed by one of the largest parties in northern Spain.
- Misteri d’Elx, Elche – a medieval sung mystery play performed in the basilica on 14–15 August, UNESCO-listed and unlike anything else.
- La Tomatina, Buñol – 25 August 2027.
- Vuelta a España – the Grand Tour usually starts in late August and runs into September.
The contrarian case: inland cities in August
If you can take the heat, Madrid, Toledo, Salamanca and Seville in August are remarkable value: hotel rates at their annual lows, no queues at the Prado or the Alcázar, and a city that belongs briefly to the people who did not leave. Museums are air-conditioned, rooftop pools are the standard Madrid solution, and the nights are long and warm.
The cost is real, though: many of the best restaurants are closed, and the middle of the day is unusable outdoors.
