December in Spain is defined by two things that surprise visitors: a long holiday weekend at the start – the puente de diciembre, 6 to 8 December – which is one of the busiest travel periods of the Spanish year, and a Christmas that does not really finish until Reyes on 6 January. In between are the best city Christmas lights in Europe, mild Andalusian afternoons and the closing of the Xacobeo Holy Year.
The puente de diciembre, 6–8 December
Two national public holidays fall three days apart: Constitution Day on Monday 6 December and the Inmaculada on Wednesday 8 December. In 2027 that puts them either side of a single working Tuesday, which almost everyone takes off – producing a five-day break from Saturday 4 to Wednesday 8 December.
It is the last big domestic travel weekend before Christmas: ski resorts open for it, coastal and mountain hotels fill, and trains and internal flights sell out. Book it from November, or plan around it – the following week is quiet and cheap.
Christmas in Spain, and what actually happens when
The Spanish Christmas runs on a different schedule from the northern European one:
- Late November – city lights switch on. Málaga’s Calle Larios display, Madrid’s Gran Vía and Vigo’s famously excessive installation draw domestic day-trippers all month.
- Through December – Christmas markets: the Fira de Santa Llúcia by Barcelona cathedral, the Plaza Mayor market in Madrid, and belén nativity scenes everywhere, some of them enormous.
- Wednesday 22 December – El Gordo, the Christmas lottery, drawn live and sung by schoolchildren. The country stops to watch it. It is the largest lottery in the world by prize pool.
- Friday 24 December – Nochebuena, the main family meal, held in the evening. This is the big night, not the 25th.
- Saturday 25 December – Navidad, a public holiday but a quieter day than the 24th.
- Tuesday 28 December – Día de los Inocentes, the Spanish April Fools’ Day.
- Friday 31 December – Nochevieja, when Spaniards eat twelve grapes at the twelve chimes of midnight, in the Puerta del Sol in Madrid or in front of the television everywhere else.
Presents traditionally arrive on 6 January with the Three Kings, not on the 25th – which is why Spanish shops stay busy right through the first week of January.
Weather
- Madrid and the interior – around 11°C by day and 4°C at night, with about 42 mm of rain and hard frosts. Cold, dry and often brilliantly clear.
- Barcelona and the Mediterranean – about 15°C, mild and comfortable for walking.
- Andalucía – Seville and Málaga near 18–19°C by day; the mildest winter city weather on the Spanish mainland.
- The Atlantic north – mild but wet; one of the rainiest months in Galicia.
- The Canary Islands – around 23°C, in high season, and the only Spanish beach destination that works now.
- The Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada – the ski season opens, generally from the December puente.
The closing of the Holy Year
The Xacobeo 2027 Holy Door closes on 31 December 2027, in the reverse of the ceremony that opened it a year earlier. Santiago de Compostela marks the end of the Holy Year with events through the month, and the cathedral is busy. The next Jacobean Holy Years are 2032, 2038 and 2049.
Prices and crowds
Three distinct phases. The 4–8 December puente is expensive and fully booked. The middle two weeks – roughly 9 to 20 December – are among the cheapest and quietest of the year, with the lights already on and the markets running: the single best value window in a Spanish December. From about 22 December to 6 January, Christmas and New Year pricing applies everywhere.
