January is the cheapest month to visit Spain and, in the cities, one of the most rewarding. The Christmas season does not end until Reyes on Wednesday 6 January 2027, the winter sales open the next day, and after that Madrid, Seville, Granada and Barcelona drop into their quietest weeks of the year. 2027 is also a Xacobeo Holy Year, and the Holy Door of Santiago Cathedral is open from the first day of January.
Reyes Magos: the real Spanish Christmas
Spanish children traditionally receive their presents from the Three Kings, not from Santa Claus, and the date is 6 January – a Wednesday in 2027 and a national public holiday.
The event is the night before. On the evening of Tuesday 5 January every town in Spain holds a cabalgata: a parade of floats carrying the Three Kings, who throw sweets into the crowd. Madrid’s is enormous, Barcelona’s arrives by sea, and the small-town versions are often better. On the 6th, families eat roscón de reyes and almost everything is shut.
Until that date, Christmas lighting and markets are still running. After it, the decorations come down within days.
The winter sales
The rebajas de invierno traditionally begin on 7 January, the day after Reyes, and run for roughly two months. Spain deregulated sale periods in 2012, so individual retailers set their own dates and some start before Christmas – but the post-Reyes date is still when the big department stores and the main shopping streets go. Discounts deepen through February.
Weather: four different countries
- Madrid and the interior – cold and dry: around 10°C by day and 3°C at night, with only about 33 mm of rain. The meseta gets hard frosts and brilliant blue skies.
- Barcelona and the Mediterranean coast – milder at around 14°C, with roughly 43 mm of rain. Comfortable walking weather.
- Andalucía – Seville, Córdoba and Málaga run near 16–17°C by day, and January there is genuinely pleasant. Granada is colder, with the Sierra Nevada behind it under snow.
- The Atlantic north – Galicia, Asturias and the Basque Country are mild but wet; this is the rainiest part of Spain and January is one of its wettest months.
- The Canary Islands – around 21°C and dry. The only genuinely warm winter destination in Spain, and the reason Tenerife and Gran Canaria are in high season now.
Skiing in Spain
Spain has more ski terrain than most visitors expect. Baqueira Beret and the Aragonese and Catalan Pyrenees are the main resorts, and Sierra Nevada above Granada is the southernmost in Europe – close enough that you can ski in the morning and be in the Alhambra’s gardens the same afternoon. January is peak season.
Xacobeo 2027
2027 is a Jacobean Holy Year, which happens when St James’s Day – 25 July – falls on a Sunday. The Holy Door of Santiago de Compostela cathedral opened on 31 December 2026 and stays open for the whole of 2027.
For January that mostly means Santiago itself is busier than usual for the season. The practical consequence arrives later: the Camino’s popular stages will be heavily booked from spring onwards, so if you are walking in 2027, reserve accommodation far earlier than you normally would.
What January is good for
- Cities without queues. The Prado, the Alhambra, the Sagrada Família and the Mezquita are all easier in January than in any other month.
- Price. The cheapest flights and city hotel rates of the year, once Reyes has passed.
- Andalusian light. Seville and Córdoba in winter sun are underrated.
- Food. Winter is game, stews, cocido madrileño and the start of the citrus season in Valencia.
Prices and crowds
Expensive and busy to 6 January; then among the cheapest weeks of the year. The Canaries are the exception and run at winter-sun high season throughout, as do the ski resorts.

What to pack

- Friday 1 January – Año Nuevo, a public holiday; very little opens before midday.
- Tuesday 5 January – the Cabalgata de Reyes parades in every town, in the evening.
- Wednesday 6 January – Reyes, a national public holiday; most shops, restaurants and sites closed.
- Thursday 7 January – the winter rebajas traditionally open; decorations come down.
- From about 8 January – the quietest and cheapest weeks of the Spanish year.
- All month – peak ski season in the Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada; high season in the Canaries.
