Honest expectations

- It is the greyest month – low cloud rather than dramatic weather, and some of the fewest hours of sunshine in the Swedish year.

If you need daylight, this is the wrong month. If you want a beautiful, expensive northern city at its cheapest, with world-class museums almost to yourself and a candle on every café table, it is a real and underrated trip.

All Saints’ Day in Sweden is the Saturday falling between 31 October and 6 November – 6 November in 2027, with All Saints’ Eve on the Friday. It is a public holiday and one of the most striking things you can see in Stockholm.
Swedes light candles on family graves after dark, and the cemeteries fill with thousands of small flames. Skogskyrkogården, the Woodland Cemetery on the southern edge of the city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its landscape architecture, is extraordinary on that evening. It has its own metro station. Go quietly: this is a day of remembrance for the families there, not a visitor attraction.
Höstlov and julbord
- Höstlov, the schools’ autumn holiday, is week 44 in Stockholm – 1 to 7 November in 2027. Museums run children’s programmes and family attractions are busy; otherwise it barely affects a visitor.
- Julbord season starts in November. The Swedish Christmas buffet – herring first, then cold cuts, then warm dishes, then dessert, in that order, and you do not mix them – runs in restaurants from roughly mid-November to shortly before Christmas. It is one of the best meals in the Swedish year and it is a November and early-December thing, not a 25 December thing. Book ahead.
Advent, and the last week of the month
First Advent falls on Sunday 28 November 2027 – the fourth Sunday before Christmas. It is the practical start of the Swedish Christmas season:
- Advent stars and candlesticks appear in windows across the city, which is genuinely transformative in a place this dark.
- The Christmas lights go on along the main streets.
- The Christmas markets open – the Stortorget market in Gamla Stan and the Skansen Christmas market both start around the last weekend of November.
The practical advice for November is simple: if you can, travel in the last week rather than the first three.
