January is the coolest month in Dubai and the peak of its season. Days sit around 24°C, nights drop to about 15°C – genuinely cool enough for a jacket, which catches people out – and everything the city built for the outdoors finally works. It is also the most expensive month of the year and the one most likely to rain.
The weather, precisely
Two things surprise first-time January visitors:
- The evenings are cold by Gulf standards. 15°C with a breeze off the water, sitting outside on a terrace or in the desert, is jacket weather. Desert camps in January can fall towards 10°C overnight.
- The sea is cooler than the air. At around 22°C the Gulf is swimmable but brisk – a long way from the 34°C bath it becomes in August. Most hotel pools are heated in winter for exactly this reason; check that yours is.
Rain: the one month it matters
Dubai averages only a handful of rainy days a year, and January and February are when almost all of them fall. When it does rain it tends to arrive hard and briefly, and the city handles it poorly: drainage is limited, roads flood quickly, traffic seizes and outdoor attractions close at short notice.
It is not a reason to avoid January – most visits see none at all – but it is a reason to keep one indoor day flexible rather than booking every hour.
What January is for
- The desert. Peak season for desert safaris and overnight camps, with comfortable days and cold, clear nights. Take more layers than the operator suggests.
- Beaches and outdoor pools. JBR, Kite Beach and La Mer are at their best. Public beaches are free.
- Walking. January is one of only four or five months where walking Al Fahidi, the Creek or the souks in the middle of the day is pleasant rather than an endurance test.
- Global Village – the huge outdoor pavilion park, open roughly mid-October to late April, is in full swing.
- Dubai Miracle Garden – the flower park operates in the cool season only, roughly November to May.
- The Dubai Shopping Festival runs from around mid-December into late January, with citywide discounts, raffles and nightly fireworks.
Prices and crowds
This is high season and priced like it. Hotel rates in January are near their annual peak, along with December, February and March, and can be two to three times the July figure for the same room. Restaurants, brunches and desert tours need booking well in advance.

What to pack
Summer clothing for the day, plus a real jacket or fleece for the evening and something warm for a desert night. Modest options for mosques, souks and older districts – shoulders and knees covered. Sunscreen still applies: the January sun is mild but direct. Swimwear for the beach and hotel, and a light waterproof is not a bad idea this month.
