November is the emptiest month in Switzerland. The autumn season has ended, the ski season has not begun, the passes are closing and much of the mountain infrastructure is shut for servicing. It is also the cheapest month of the year, and if you come for cities, thermal baths, museums and the first Christmas markets, it works very well.
The numbers
The between-season, honestly described
- Most ski resorts are not open. The main season generally starts in the last week of November at the earliest and more commonly in December. Zermatt and Saas-Fee, with glacier terrain, are the usual exceptions.
- Many cable cars and mountain railways are closed for their between-season maintenance. Check each operator rather than assuming.
- The high passes are shut or closing – the Grimsel, Furka, Susten, Nufenen and Klausen among them. Tunnels and car-carrying trains handle cross-Alpine traffic.
- Mountain huts are closed, and high trails are under early snow.
- What is open: the whole rail network, the year-round mountain railways at Jungfraujoch, Pilatus, Rigi and Gornergrat, every city, every museum and every thermal bath.
Fog season, and the answer to it
The Swiss Plateau – Zurich, Bern, Lucerne, Basel – enters its Hochnebel season in November. A temperature inversion traps cold, grey stratus over the lowlands, sometimes for days, while the mountains above roughly 1,000 to 1,500 m sit in clear sunshine looking down on a sea of cloud.
The answer is the same all winter: go up. Rigi, Pilatus, Stanserhorn, Stoos and the Schilthorn all have year-round access and can turn a grey day into a bright one in twenty minutes. Swiss meteorologists publish fog and inversion forecasts, and mountain webcams are the quickest practical check.
Swiss traditions in November
- Rabeliechtli – turnip lantern processions, held in many towns in early-to-mid November. Children carve lanterns from turnips and parade after dark. It is small-scale, local, and entirely unpackaged for tourists.
- The Zibelemarit in Bern, Monday 22 November 2027 – the onion market, held on the fourth Monday of November. It starts before dawn, fills the old town with braided onion strings and confetti, and is one of the biggest single-day events in the Swiss calendar.
- Christmas markets open in the last week of November in Basel, Zurich, Bern, Lucerne and Montreux, so the end of the month already feels like December.
- St Martin’s feasts around 11 November, particularly in the Jura, where the traditional pork menu is a serious local occasion.

- Bern for the Zibelemarit and the best-preserved old town in the country.
- Basel and Zurich for museums – Basel has one of the densest museum concentrations in Europe – and for the Christmas markets at the end of the month.
- Leukerbad, Vals, Scuol and Bad Ragaz for thermal water, which is exactly right in November weather.
- Ticino, several degrees milder, and the emptiest it ever gets.
- Above the fog – Rigi, Pilatus, Stoos, Stanserhorn and the Schilthorn for a day in the sun.
- The scenic rail routes, which run all year and are dramatically cheaper and quieter now.

The lowest of the year, alongside April. City hotels are at their cheapest, and mountain hotels are either closed or heavily discounted. What to pack
Warm layers and a genuinely waterproof coat. Waterproof shoes with grip – wet leaves and early frost are the main hazard underfoot. A hat and gloves for any mountain railway, where it is already deep winter at the top. Sunglasses for above-the-fog days. An umbrella for the cities, where the grey can be persistent.
