Winter is two different holidays, so decide which one you are buying first

A winter trip is either a trip to somewhere colder than home or a trip to somewhere warmer, and almost every other decision follows from that single choice. Deciding it first is what stops a shortlist turning into fifteen places that cannot be compared with each other.

Going colder buys you a season you cannot have at home: snow underfoot, a functioning ski lift, a dark enough sky for aurora, an outdoor Christmas market, a hot spring or a sauna that only makes sense at minus five. You pay for it in daylight, in bulk, and in specialist cover. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office guidance on foreign travel insurance lists ‘sports such as bungee jumping, jet skiing, winter sports or skydiving’ among the exclusions to look out for, and says those are not usually included in standard policies. The same guidance is blunt that a GHIC or EHIC is no substitute, because those cards cover neither repatriation nor ‘additional costs such as mountain rescue in ski resorts’.

Going warmer buys you reliable daylight and heat either by crossing the equator into another hemisphere’s summer or by finding a tropical dry season. You pay for it in flight hours and in the fact that you are usually arriving in that destination’s own high season rather than sneaking into its quiet months. The same FCDO guidance flags the matching exclusion at that end: on natural disasters ‘such as an earthquake or tropical cyclone’, it warns that some policies only offer limited cover.

Buy the cover when you book, not when you pack. The FCDO guidance says to buy travel insurance as soon as possible after booking, and warns separately that travelling to a destination where the FCDO advises against all but essential travel or all travel may invalidate a policy outright. That wording is as of 5 September 2026 and the guidance is revised without notice, so read it again on the day you buy.

The two trips also behave differently as objects. A cold-weather winter trip is usually one base with a lift pass or a guide, because moving in winter is slow and the day is short. A warm-weather winter trip can move, because the days are long and even and the roads are open. That difference decides how many nights you should book in one place before you look at a single destination name.

They also price differently, because cold-weather winter destinations have a genuine second high season and warm-weather ones do not. Statistics Austria reported 18.09 million nights spent in Austrian accommodation in February 2026, 5.1 per cent more than the 17.21 million of February 2025, and 54.25 million across the whole November 2025 to February 2026 stretch, which its release of 26 March 2026 calls the highest figure for that period since digital records began in 1974. February alone supplied a third of that four-month total, and the release describes February as ‘traditionally the most important month of the winter tourist season’, accounting for more than a quarter of all nights spent in winter. That is what a real winter high season looks like from the inside: not December, and not evenly spread.

Why the Christmas and New Year fortnight prices differently from a February ski week

Because the Christmas break is one identical date range for everybody, while the February break is deliberately staggered, so the same families are spread across five weeks instead of stacked into two.

France sets this out in law and it is the clearest published example of the mechanism. The arrêté of 22 October 2025 fixing the 2026-2027 school calendar, published in the Journal Officiel, gives the vacances de Noël as Saturday 19 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027 for all three zones at once. The vacances d’hiver are then split: Zone C leaves on Saturday 6 February 2027 and returns Monday 22 February; Zone A leaves Saturday 13 February and returns Monday 1 March; Zone B leaves Saturday 20 February and returns Monday 8 March.

Read those two rules together and the pricing follows. French winter-sports demand is spread across the 30 days between Saturday 6 February and Monday 8 March 2027, with only the overlap weeks stacking. French Christmas demand lands on one fortnight, together, everywhere.

The practical consequence is that the week containing New Year is the most contested week of the entire winter, in the mountains and on the beaches at the same time. Long-haul fares to warm destinations spike on the same dates as Alpine chalets, because both are being bought by the same households on the same two weeks of leave.

A national statistics office can be watched measuring this happen. Statistics Austria attributed part of the rise in international guests in February 2026 to the timing of the German winter holidays, which fell entirely in February that year but partly in March the year before. Nothing about Austrian snow changed. A neighbouring country’s school calendar moved, and the month’s figures moved with it. The same release shows the host country doing the staggering to itself as well, naming Austrian school holidays spread across three separate periods, together with the winter holidays in neighbouring countries, as the reason February’s overnight stays reached 18.09 million. The release records German guests supplying 19.22 million of Austria’s 42.83 million non-resident winter nights and Dutch guests 5.81 million, so those two markets between them accounted for more than half.

The same reading gives you the cheap window. Once the return date passes and before the first February zone leaves, there are 33 days from Monday 4 January to Saturday 6 February 2027 in which lifts run, resorts are staffed and school-holiday demand has gone. It is the single largest price gap in the winter calendar and it is created by an administrative decision, not by the snow.

Check the current year rather than assuming: the zones are periodically reassigned and the dates move. As of 5 September 2026 those dates are the 2026-2027 arrêté, Legifrance identifier JORFTEXT000052416058; re-check on Legifrance before booking a 2027-2028 trip, because that calendar is normally published the previous autumn.

Where to get school holiday dates you can actually trust

From the education ministry or the local authority that legally sets them, never from a booking site, and check three calendars rather than one.

France publishes the calendar as an arrêté in the Journal Officiel, which means it is searchable on Legifrance and carries a text identifier you can cite. The 2026-2027 calendar is JORFTEXT000052416058, signed 22 October 2025.

The United Kingdom does not work that way, and this catches people out. The gov.uk school term and holiday dates service states that dates vary across the UK and asks for a postcode so it can send you to your local council, and that postcode lookup covers England and Wales only, with Scotland and Northern Ireland handled through a separate link. On top of that, gov.uk’s own description of academies says they can set their own term times, and its description of free schools says they can change the length of school terms and the school day. Two schools four miles apart can therefore break up in different weeks. There is no single national list, and any site presenting one is presenting an approximation.

Three calendars matter for a winter trip:

  • Yours, which sets when you can go.
  • The destination’s own, which sets whether the place is full of domestic visitors while you are there.
  • The calendar of whichever country supplies most of that destination’s visitors, which sets the price. An Alpine resort that sells mostly to one national market will move with that market’s zone, not with yours, which is exactly what the Austrian February figures show.

Destination-side holidays are the ones travellers forget. A warm-weather beach that is empty for a European in mid-January can be completely full a fortnight later for a domestic public holiday, with transport booked out and prices reset. Lunar New Year is the largest example and it moves every year, so look it up for your specific year on the destination government’s own public holiday list rather than assuming it falls in late January.

What the colder trip actually asks of you: daylight, moon and aurora timing

Short daylight and a demanding sky, not simply cold. Cold is the part people prepare for; the light is the part that changes what you can do with a day.

Compute the daylight rather than guessing it. The United States Naval Observatory’s Astronomical Applications Department publishes a free table generator, ‘Table of Sunrise/Sunset, Moonrise/Moonset, or Twilight Times for an Entire Year’, which produces data for any location worldwide for any year between 1700 and 2100, and offers civil, nautical and astronomical twilight as well as sunrise and sunset. Civil twilight is the number that decides your day, and the same department defines it exactly: civil twilight ends in the evening when the centre of the Sun is geometrically 6 degrees below the horizon, and before morning civil twilight or after evening civil twilight ‘artificial illumination is normally required to carry on ordinary outdoor activities’. Inside civil twilight you can still work outdoors without lights. A high-latitude December day can therefore carry far more usable time than the sunrise-to-sunset figure suggests, and that is often the difference between a workable afternoon and a wasted one.

The most expensive myth in winter travel is that midwinter is the aurora peak. It is not. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center states that the best seasons for aurora watching are around the spring and autumn equinoxes, because there is a tendency towards larger geomagnetic storms near those times. The same page adds the caveat that most repetitions of it drop: the number of hours of darkness changes rapidly near the equinoxes, so an equinox trip trades storm odds against sky time. Midwinter reliably supplies the darkness, which is necessary but not sufficient.

Four further points from the same source are worth planning around:

  • Best aurora is usually within an hour or two of midnight, between about 22:00 and 02:00 local time, and those hours widen towards evening and morning as geomagnetic activity rises. A tour that returns at 22:30 has missed most of the window.
  • Standing in the right place beats waiting for a big storm. The Space Weather Prediction Center says that in the right place under the aurora you can see very nice displays even at a Kp index of 3 or 4. At Kp 6 to 7 it might be possible to see the aurora from the northern edge of the United States, and at Kp 8 to 9 it may be seen directly overhead from the northern states, but the same page warns those Kp-to-latitude relationships are approximate averages.
  • The mechanism behind that: at Kp 0 the equatorward edge of the auroral oval sits at roughly 66 degrees magnetic latitude and moves about 2 degrees towards the equator for each step of Kp, reaching about 48 degrees at Kp 9. From a good vantage point you can see aurora even when it is 1,000 km, about 600 miles, further north than you are.
  • A full moon diminishes the apparent brightness of the aurora, not its actual brightness. The same free Naval Observatory tables give moonrise and moonset, so you can pick a moon-dark window when you choose your dates.

Book at least three or four consecutive nights in an aurora location. One clear night with a quiet magnetic field produces nothing, and no operator can change that.

What the warmer trip costs you, and the one risk it does not remove

It costs flight hours and it puts you in someone else’s peak season, and it does not remove weather risk, it changes what the risk is.

You are almost never travelling in a quiet season. Cross the equator in December to February and you land in the southern hemisphere’s own summer holidays, with domestic families on the move, school terms out and coastal prices at their annual maximum. Stay north of the equator and go tropical, and you are usually arriving in the local dry season, which is also the local high season for exactly the reason you came.

The cost that gets underestimated is not the fare, it is the shape of the trip. A long-haul flight taken for a seven-night winter break spends the first day, and often the second, on arrival and adjustment rather than on the holiday. On a break that short, the arithmetic alone can justify a four-hour destination over a ten-hour one even when the ten-hour one is warmer.

The residual risk is that warm and dry are not the same thing. A place can be reliably hot in the northern winter and still be in the middle of its wettest months, and a place can be reliably hot and dry and still sit inside a tropical cyclone basin whose official season is open. Those are two separate checks and both are free to run:

  1. Pull the monthly rainfall normal and the monthly rain-day count for the specific month you are travelling, from the national meteorological service or the WMO World Weather Information Service.
  2. Identify which tropical cyclone basin the destination sits in, and whether that basin’s official season covers your travel month. The basins carry different official dates set by different agencies, so the answer for the Caribbean is not the answer for northern Australia, and the agencies themselves note that activity sometimes occurs outside the official dates.

Do those two checks before you compare prices and the shortlist usually halves.

Prefer a destination whose own high season is not that fortnight, which in practice means somewhere with a long dry season rather than a short one. Fly on the public holidays themselves rather than the days either side. And if the trip is aurora or snow dependent, extend the stay by a night rather than adding a second base, because the failure mode is a single bad night, not a bad destination.
