Things to Do in Hong Kong: What Is Actually Worth Your Time
Quick answer: This is an honest look at what is genuinely worth your time in Hong Kong, including the spot most visitors never reach. It also covers the transit and money moves that save the most hassle.

The attraction most worth skipping is the paid Sky Terrace 428 at the top of the Peak Tram ride. The platform sits at about 428m above sea level; the open-air Lugard Road Lookout, a flat walk from the Peak Tower, sits at roughly 426m and costs nothing. You get the same skyline without the Peak Tram queue, which can run around 45 to 90 minutes on weekend afternoons, and a quiet tree-lined loop that tour groups rarely bother with.
The pick most visitors miss is Tai Kwun at 10 Hollywood Road in Central, the restored former Central Police Station compound. Admission is free, the daily Heritage Walk docent tour is free, and you can stand inside real Victorian-era prison cells before browsing the art galleries upstairs.
One smart money move concerns the harbour. Dedicated Symphony of Lights cruises start around HK$280, but the regular Star Ferry between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui costs only about HK$3 to HK$4 and crosses the same water during the 8pm light show. To climb up to Tai Kwun and the SoHo bars above it, ride the Central-Mid-Levels Escalator, the world’s longest outdoor covered escalator at roughly 800m; it runs uphill from about 10:20am to midnight, also free.
