Quieter Bases for Families, and Why the Riviera Disappoints Sightseers
If you are travelling with kids or just want the center without the crowds, skip the obvious choices and look at two residential neighbourhoods most first-time guides leave out. Thiseio sits on the west flank of the Acropolis with pedestrianised streets, tree-lined cafe terraces, and clear views up to the rock, which makes pushing a stroller easy and the noise level low; apartments here run around 70 to 120 euros a night. Pangrati, southeast past the marble Panathenaic Stadium, is where Athenians actually eat and drink, with prices stretching from about 45 euros for a simple flat to roughly 130 for a smarter one. It is around a 5-minute walk to the stadium and about 20 minutes to the Acropolis Museum, so you trade a little walking for real neighbourhood life.
For families who still want everything close, Koukaki is the easiest pick, calm at night and roughly a 10-minute walk to the Acropolis.
The base I would not book for a short sightseeing trip is the Athens Riviera around Glyfada. The beaches are genuinely good, but the center is a 30 to 50 minute taxi ride in traffic, so the Acropolis becomes a planned half-day outing rather than a morning stroll.
