Which tropical cyclone basins are open in January, and which are shut

In January the two basins that govern the Caribbean and the Mexican coasts are formally closed, and every southern hemisphere basin is open. That single split explains most of what is safe and what is not in a January beach booking.

Closed for the whole month. The US National Hurricane Center gives the Atlantic hurricane season as 1 June to 30 November and the eastern Pacific season as 15 May to 30 November, so the Caribbean, Florida, Cuba and both Mexican coasts sit outside their seasons for all of January. The same page puts the first Atlantic named storm of a typical year in mid to late June, and the first eastern Pacific one in early to mid June. That is why these coasts price January as high season.

Open across the South Pacific, and at the peak of its season. The Fiji Meteorological Service, which runs RSMC Nadi, states that the tropical cyclone season in the southwest Pacific extends from November to April, with peak activity normally from January to March, and that around seven tropical cyclones affect the RSMC Nadi area of responsibility in an average season. It also records systems forming occasionally in October and May and rarely in September and June, so the published window describes where the risk concentrates rather than a gate that opens and shuts.

Open across the Australian region. The Bureau of Meteorology states that the Australian cyclone season officially runs from November to April, and puts average formation at about eleven cyclones in the Australian region between 90 and 160 degrees east each season, roughly 13 per cent of the global total. The Bureau splits landfall risk by sub-basin: around a 25 per cent chance of crossing the coast in the western and eastern sub-basins, and an 80 per cent chance in the northern one. CSIRO publishes the same November to April window and the same figure of about eleven cyclones a year, of which typically four to five reach land.

Open across the western Indian Ocean, under an unusual naming rule. Mauritius Meteorological Services records that Madagascar names systems west of 55 degrees east, Mauritius between 55 and 90 degrees east and the Australian Bureau of Meteorology east of 90 degrees east, and that a cyclone crossing into the Mauritian zone from the Australian region keeps its Australian name, following a Tropical Cyclone Committee decision taken in Nairobi in 2010. The regional warning centre is Météo-France La Réunion. The season start and end dates for this basin are set in a WMO instrument rather than by any one island: the Tropical Cyclone Operational Plan for the South-West Indian Ocean, WMO-No. 1178 / TCP-12, whose current edition the World Meteorological Organization listed as 2025 when checked on 5 September 2026. Read the dates there or from Météo-France La Réunion direct. For the wider season, Mauritius Meteorological Services describes the Mauritian summer as a warm humid one extending from November to April. The figure to know before booking Mauritius or Madagascar in January is the warning lead time: Mauritius issues a Class I warning not less than 36 hours and not more than 48 hours before gusts of 120 km/h are expected, and times Class II and Class III to leave about 12 and about six hours of daylight before them. A Class IV is issued once gusts of 120 km/h are already being recorded and are expected to continue.

Never formally closed. The western North Pacific has no closed season, which matters for the Philippines. The Japan Meteorological Agency’s 1991 to 2020 normals put January formation at 0.3 tropical cyclones of tropical storm strength or above, against 5.7 in August and 25.1 for the year. Its record since 1951 shows ten January systems across the thirty years from 1991 to 2020, and 21 of those 30 Januaries produced none.

Structurally a quiet month in the north Indian Ocean, and the authority explains why. For the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea the authority is RSMC New Delhi, run by the India Meteorological Department. Its own science plan, signed by the Director General of Meteorology on 30 October 2011 and built on the 1891 to 2008 record, states that tropical cyclones occur in the North Indian Ocean prominently during the pre-monsoon season of March, April and May and the post-monsoon season of October, November and December, and that more than 80 per cent of all cyclonic disturbances occur in the months June to November with a maximum in August. January falls outside both of the seasons the department names. The same document counts about five to six tropical cyclones a year across the North Indian Ocean, four over the Bay of Bengal and one over the Arabian Sea, and puts nearly 7 per cent of the world’s tropical cyclones in this ocean. IMD publishes a separate frequency map for the winter season, which is where a month-level count belongs.

Every season window, average and lead time here was read from the responsible warning centre or its own published document on 5 September 2026. Each centre reissues a seasonal outlook before its own season opens, so check the current one against your dates rather than relying on a climatological average.

Why January fares and rates break either side of the first full week

Because the day the holiday ends is fixed by ministries and statute months in advance, so January demand drops on one date instead of tapering. For 2027 that date is Monday 4 January.

New Year’s Day 2027 falls on a Friday, listed as Friday 1 January 2027 in the New South Wales and Queensland government public holiday tables. That puts the New Year block on 1 to 3 January and makes the first full working week of 2027 the week beginning Monday 4 January.

France pins the date hardest. The school calendar dataset published by the French Ministry of Education on data.education.gouv.fr records the 2026-2027 vacances de Noël as beginning Saturday 19 December 2026 and ending with the resumption of classes on Monday 4 January 2027, and it gives that same resumption date for Zone A, Zone B and Zone C alike. Set that against the February holidays in the same dataset, which are deliberately staggered a week apart: Zone C breaks up on Saturday 6 February 2027, Zone A on Saturday 13 February and Zone B on Saturday 20 February. Christmas is not staggered and February is, so French demand for winter sun stops on a single Monday rather than spreading over three weeks.

Two dated bumps then interrupt the cheap stretch. The US Office of Personnel Management’s published 2027 federal holiday schedule puts the Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday 18 January 2027, and Japan’s Cabinet Office holiday list gives Coming of Age Day as Monday 11 January 2027, each a three-day weekend in a large source market.

Depart after the first weekend and get home before the last week, and treat the return leg as the harder half, because a flight home on Sunday 3 January 2027 competes with everyone else getting back for the 4th.

All the 2027 dates here were read from the issuing bodies’ own published calendars on 5 September 2026. Term dates and public holiday schedules do get amended, so confirm yours before committing to non-refundable travel.

January is a full holiday month in Australia, which reprices half the Pacific

January is not low season everywhere. It is the middle of the Australian school summer holidays, so anywhere Australians fly to in numbers is in peak season during exactly the weeks Europe is at its cheapest.

The New South Wales Department of Education’s published 2027 term dates make the extent of it plain. For Eastern division schools the summer holidays run from Friday 18 December 2026 to Wednesday 27 January 2027, and Term 1 does not start for students until Wednesday 3 February 2027. Western division schools start Term 1 later still, on Wednesday 10 February 2027. Australia Day adds a public holiday on Tuesday 26 January 2027 in both New South Wales and Queensland.

So the whole of January 2027 sits inside the Australian break. Two things follow. Bali, Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, tropical Queensland and New Zealand price January as high season, driven by a source market on holiday, and several of them sit inside an open cyclone basin for the same weeks. And the cheaper January destinations are the ones whose main source markets are northern, because those markets go back to work on 4 January.

If the plan is Australia or the South Pacific and the dates can move, the first half of February clears the Australian school holidays while keeping southern summer, at the cost of staying inside the cyclone season.

What is genuinely in season in January, on each national service’s own normals

The destinations that hold up are the ones whose driest month is the northern winter: inland Egypt, southern Oman, the Mexican Pacific and inland Cambodia lead on published normals.

Inland Egypt is the driest of the set. Working from the 1981-2010 reference period published by the Egyptian Meteorological Authority, Aswan records a January mean daily maximum of 22.9C with 0.1 mm of rain across 0.1 rain days, and Luxor 23.0C with 1.6 mm. Both hand back very cold nights: 8.8C at Aswan and 5.9C at Luxor.

Southern Oman inverts the pattern most people expect. On the Directorate General of Meteorology’s 1986-2009 normals, Salalah gives 27.5C by day and 18.7C overnight, with January rainfall of 0.9 mm, while its wet months are the middle of the year at 21.9 mm in July and 25.1 mm in August. Muscat at Seeb, same service and period, is 25.1C and 16.7C with 13.2 mm in January against 3.4 mm in July.

Acapulco is the rare January that stays hot after dark. The Mexican Servicio Meteorológico Nacional’s 1971-2000 normals give 30.3C and 23.3C with 13.1 mm across a single rain day, and that 23.3C is the lowest monthly minimum in Acapulco’s year. Inland Yucatan is cooler at night: Mérida is 31.3C and 17.0C.

January and February are the driest months of the Cambodian year inland. Cambodia’s Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, on a 1982-2024 record, gives Siem Reap 30.9C and 20.0C with 4.3 mm in January and 3.8 mm in February, against 305.2 mm in September. Those entries count a rain day only above 4 mm, so their day counts are not comparable with a station using 0.1 mm.

The pattern across all of them: a warm January day is easy to buy and a warm January night is not. Acapulco’s 23.3C overnight is the outlier, and it sits fourteen and a half degrees above Aswan’s.

Seven destinations whose own January figures undercut the January label

These are places sold as January sun whose own national meteorological service records a wet January, a cool January, or both.

  • Seychelles. On the Seychelles Meteorological Authority’s 1981-2010 normals for Seychelles International Airport, no month of the year is wetter than January: 403.7 mm across 20 rain days, against 89.1 mm in July, and its 30.0C day gives nothing away.
  • Sri Lanka’s east coast. The National Meteorological Centre’s 1961-1990 normals put Trincomalee at 115.6 mm in January with a mean daily maximum of 27.8C, which is the lowest monthly maximum in its year and three degrees below its March figure of 30.8C, after a December of 364.5 mm. Batticaloa records 210.3 mm in January against 89.0 mm in March, while Galle on the southern coast is 85.1 mm. A single national figure hides that split.
  • The Dominican north coast. On the Oficina Nacional de Meteorología’s 1961-1990 normals, Puerto Plata records 190.3 mm across 12.8 rain days in January with a 17.4C overnight minimum, while Punta Cana on the east coast records 66.4 mm and 21.9C. Same country, same month, 124 mm apart.
  • The Gulf of Thailand islands. Thai Meteorological Department figures give Ko Samui 137.8 mm across 11 rain days in January, after a December of 209.1 mm and a November of 489.6 mm, its wettest month. February, at 57.8 mm across 5.5 rain days, is the driest month of its year, so February and March book better than January on Samui.
  • Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. Instituto Meteorológico Nacional figures for Limón, rainfall normals 1941-2003 and temperature normals 1970-2003, give 303.3 mm across 18.1 rain days in January, and 448.7 mm in December.
  • Darwin. On Bureau of Meteorology 1981-2010 normals, Darwin Airport records 465.5 mm across 22.3 rain days in January, its wettest month, inside an open cyclone season.
  • Northern Thailand, on temperature rather than rain. Chiang Mai is genuinely dry in January at 7.7 mm on Thai Meteorological Department figures, but its mean daily minimum is 14.2C against a 29.4C maximum.

How to decide a January trip, in order

Work these four checks in order, because the calendar decides more of the price than the choice of country does, and the overnight figure decides more of the holiday than the daytime one.

  1. Fix the week before the destination. Departing from 4 January 2027 onward, and avoiding your own market’s mid-January long weekend, does more for the price than swapping countries.
  2. Rule out any open basin you will not accept, then read the warning lead times the local service publishes rather than assuming you get days of notice.
  3. Pick the coast, not the country. Trincomalee against Galle, and Puerto Plata against Punta Cana, are the same month in the same country.
  4. Read the overnight minimum last and treat it as a veto. A 5.9C January night in Luxor is a different holiday from a 23.3C one in Acapulco.

Frequently asked questions

When is the cheapest week to fly in January 2027?

The stretch that opens once the New Year block ends. New Year’s Day 2027 falls on a Friday, so the first full working week begins Monday 4 January, the same morning French schools in all three zones resume on the Ministry of Education’s own calendar data. Two long weekends then interrupt it: Coming of Age Day in Japan on Monday 11 January and the Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. in the United States on Monday 18 January.

Are the Caribbean and Mexico free of hurricanes in January?

Both seasons are formally closed: the US National Hurricane Center gives the Atlantic season as 1 June to 30 November and the eastern Pacific season as 15 May to 30 November. That removes the largest weather risk, not the rain. Puerto Plata on the Dominican north coast still averages 190.3 mm across 12.8 rain days in January.

Which cyclone basins are actually active in January?

Three southern hemisphere basins, plus one that never closes. The Australian region season runs November to April on Bureau of Meteorology figures, with about eleven cyclones forming per season. RSMC Nadi covers the South Pacific over the same months, reports about seven affecting its area in an average season and puts peak activity in January to March. The south-west Indian Ocean is warned by Meteo-France La Reunion, with its season dates set in WMO-No. 1178 / TCP-12, the Tropical Cyclone Operational Plan for that basin. The western North Pacific has no closed season at all.

Why is Bali expensive in January when Europe is cheap?

Because its nearest large source market is on school holiday all month. The New South Wales Department of Education’s 2027 term dates put the summer holidays from Friday 18 December 2026 to Wednesday 27 January 2027, with Term 1 beginning Wednesday 3 February 2027 for Eastern division schools. Northern markets go back to work on 4 January; Australia does not.

Which side of Sri Lanka is dry in January?

The south and west, not the east. On the National Meteorological Centre’s 1961-1990 normals, Galle records 85.1 mm across 8 rain days in January, Trincomalee 115.6 mm with a mean daily maximum of only 27.8C, and Batticaloa 210.3 mm across 11 rain days. The east coast dries out later in the year: Trincomalee falls to 55.5 mm in March and 25.4 mm in June, after a December of 364.5 mm.

Where in January is warm at night as well as by day?

Acapulco is the clearest case in this set of official figures: 30.3C by day and 23.3C overnight with 13.1 mm of rain on Mexico’s 1971-2000 normals. For comparison, Luxor’s January overnight minimum is 5.9C, Mérida’s 17.0C and Muscat’s 16.7C.

Is January inside the cyclone season in Fiji and the South Pacific?

Yes, and it is the peak of it. The Fiji Meteorological Service, which runs RSMC Nadi, states that the tropical cyclone season in the southwest Pacific extends from November to April with peak activity normally from January to March, and that around seven tropical cyclones affect its area of responsibility in an average season. It also records systems occasionally in October and May, and rarely in September and June. Nadi Airport itself averages 299 mm of rain across 18 rain days in January on 1961-1990 normals.

Do tropical cyclones reach Sri Lanka, the Maldives or India in January?

January sits outside both of the seasons the India Meteorological Department names. Its science plan, on the 1891 to 2008 record, puts North Indian Ocean tropical cyclones prominently in the pre-monsoon months of March to May and the post-monsoon months of October to December, and states that more than 80 per cent of all cyclonic disturbances occur between June and November with a maximum in August. The department counts about five to six tropical cyclones a year across the whole basin, four over the Bay of Bengal and one over the Arabian Sea. Confirm the current position with RSMC New Delhi rather than treating January as empty.
