The practical effect: one solid sightseeing block a day, in low golden light, with the rest of the day available for the aurora, the pools and eating. Plan a single main objective per day and you will enjoy November; plan three and you will spend it driving in the dark.
The ice caves open
The natural ice caves under Vatnajokull open for the season in November, once sustained cold has made them stable, and run to about March. They are re-surveyed every year – the caves are never the same twice – and they can only be visited on a guided tour. No exceptions, and no solo visits: this is how people get killed in Iceland.
The alternatives that do not depend on the season: the Katla ice cave on the south coast, open year-round because volcanic ash insulates the ice, and the manmade ice tunnel inside Langjokull.
Aurora, with the longest useful nights yet
November sits in the strong middle of the September-to-April season, with fifteen to nineteen hours of darkness by the end of the month. Use the Icelandic Met Office forecast at en.vedur.is for both activity and cloud cover, chase the clear sky rather than the biggest number, get out of Reykjavik’s light, and stay at least three nights.
Iceland Airwaves
Reykjavik’s music festival takes over downtown venues for three days in early November – the 2026 edition ran 5 to 7 November – with a mix of Icelandic acts and international names playing rooms of a few hundred people. Off-venue shows in bars and record shops run free alongside the ticketed programme, which is what makes it worth planning around even without a wristband.
Accommodation in central Reykjavik tightens for that week and the 2027 dates are announced in the spring, so check before booking a first-week trip.
Weather and driving
Reykjavik averages a high near 4°C and a low near 0°C, with precipitation on about 14 days. November is one of the stormiest months of the Icelandic year, and the first serious winter weather usually arrives during it.
Studded tyres become legal on 1 November and stay legal to 15 April, so hire cars are properly equipped from the start of the month. That does not make a closed road passable: check road.is, safetravel.is and vedur.is every single morning, and leave a travel plan on safetravel.is if you are going anywhere remote.
Highland F-roads are closed. The Ring Road is a winter drive in November – possible for confident drivers with slack in the schedule, and a poor idea on a tight itinerary. Reykjavik, the Golden Circle and the South Coast is the sensible route.

November is the cheapest month of the Icelandic autumn and winter before Christmas: the summer premium has gone, the festive pricing has not arrived, and the aurora crowd is smaller than in the deep winter. The exception is the Airwaves weekend in Reykjavik.

Volcanic activity
Reykjanes has erupted repeatedly in recent years, at times affecting Grindavik and the Blue Lagoon. The situation changes month to month; check safetravel.is and the Icelandic Met Office before and during your trip and follow the authorities on the ground rather than relying on any article.
What to wear
Full winter kit: waterproof and windproof shell, insulating mid-layer, thermal base, hat, gloves, and boots with real grip.
