What makes November 2028 different
Day of the Dead falls on 1 and 2 November across Mexico, with Oaxaca and Michoacan the two places most worth planning around - accommodation there is booked months ahead for those nights. Loy Krathong and Yi Peng in Thailand usually fall in mid-November on the full moon of the twelfth lunar month, filling rivers with floating lanterns and, in Chiang Mai, the sky with them. European Christmas markets open in the last week of November, typically the week before the first Sunday of Advent - which in 2028 is 3 December, putting most openings in the final days of the month. 1. Thailand
November is the turn: the south-west monsoon ends, the Andaman coast dries out and flattens, and the whole country becomes comfortable before December's peak-season pricing arrives. Loy Krathong in mid-November is one of the most photogenic festivals in Asia, especially the Yi Peng sky lanterns in Chiang Mai. The north - Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pai - is at its coolest and clearest of the year.
2. Vietnam
Vietnam's length means November splits it: Hanoi and Ha Long are cool, dry and often crisp, Hoi An and the centre are coming out of their wet season, and the south around Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong is reliably dry and warm. Central Vietnam can still see late-season storms in early November, so build flexibility into a north-to-south itinerary rather than fixing every night.
3. Rajasthan and north India
November is the best month in north India: days in the high twenties, cold clear nights, and the monsoon dust washed out of the air so the Himalaya is visible from the plains on good mornings. Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer are all at their most comfortable, and the Pushkar Camel Fair usually falls in November. Delhi's air quality is the caveat - it is at its worst from late October into December.

Day of the Dead on 1 and 2 November is the reason to be in Oaxaca or Michoacan, and it is genuinely worth arranging a trip around - the cemetery vigils are the real event, not the parades. Beyond that, November is the start of the dry season everywhere: the Yucatan and Riviera Maya are past hurricane season, Mexico City is mild and clear, and the Copper Canyon is comfortable.
5. Portugal and Madeira
Mainland Portugal in November is mild, cheap and grey around the edges, but Madeira is a genuine winter-sun option at four hours from most of Europe - high teens to low twenties, subtropical, and built for walking the levada trails. Lisbon and Porto are at their lowest prices of the year, and the Douro is quiet after the harvest.
6. South Africa
November is early summer: the first rains have greened the bushveld, Kruger's birding is exceptional with the migrants back, and the Garden Route is warm without the December domestic rush. Southern right whales are off Hermanus until about the start of the month. Prices jump sharply from mid-December, so November is the value window for a South African summer trip.
7. Northern Arizona and Utah
The Grand Canyon's South Rim, Sedona, Monument Valley and the southern Utah parks are all in the low teens to low twenties in November, with the summer crowds long gone and the winter closures not yet in effect. The North Rim of the Grand Canyon closes to vehicles in mid-October, so plan for the South Rim. Sedona's red rock trails are at their most comfortable of the year.
8. Central European cities
The first three weeks of November are the cheapest time to visit Vienna, Prague, Budapest or Krakow, with museums empty and hotel rates at their annual low.
