Sunday 15 August 2027 marks independence in 1947. The Prime Minister addresses the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort in Delhi in the morning, the flag is raised at schools, offices and public buildings across the country, and kite-flying is traditional in the north.
Practical notes: central Delhi is heavily secured and largely closed to traffic on the morning of the 15th and during rehearsals; it is a dry day in many states, with alcohol sales suspended; and monuments, banks and government offices close. The Red Fort itself is shut to visitors around the event.
The festival month
- Onam, Kerala – ten days in August or early September, with flower carpets (pookalam), the Onasadya feast served on a banana leaf, and the snake-boat races on the Pamba river. It is the best time of year to be in Kerala culturally, and it falls inside the monsoon.
- Ganesh Chaturthi – ten days in Maharashtra, Goa and the west, ending with enormous processions carrying Ganesha idols to the sea in Mumbai. The final day in Mumbai is one of the great public spectacles in India.
- Janmashtami – Krishna’s birth, celebrated hardest at Mathura, Vrindavan and Dwarka, with the dahi handi human pyramids in Mumbai.
- Raksha Bandhan – brothers and sisters, threads tied on wrists, observed nationwide.
- Nag Panchami and Teej – the monsoon festivals of Rajasthan and the north, with processions in Jaipur.
All of these move with the lunar calendar, so confirm the exact 2027 dates locally – but the cluster is always in this window.

Foreign visitor numbers are near their annual minimum, so the Golden Triangle and the palace hotels are at their cheapest.
