June is the month the monsoon takes India back. The south-west monsoon normally reaches Kerala around 1 June and then advances north over roughly six weeks, breaking the heat region by region. Delhi stays at 38°C and waits until the very end of the month; Kerala is already green and wet; Ladakh is in its short, perfect season. It is the most regionally divided month of the Indian year.
How the monsoon advances
The monsoon is not a single event but a front that moves. The normal progression:
- Around 1 June – onset over Kerala and the far south.
- Early to mid June – Goa, coastal Karnataka, Mumbai and the north-east.
- Mid to late June – central India, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha.
- Late June into early July – Delhi, Rajasthan and the north-west; the whole country is normally covered by about 8 July.
Onset dates vary by a week or more in either direction each year, and the IMD publishes the advance as it happens. Until it arrives, a region stays in its pre-monsoon heat – which is why Delhi in mid-June is still brutal while Kochi is under water.

- Delhi and the north – still about 38°C by day and 27°C at night, with roughly 81 mm arriving mostly at the end of the month. Humid and heavy once the monsoon breaks.
- Kerala and the south-west – in full monsoon: warm, wet, green, and dramatic. Rain comes in heavy bursts, not all day.
- Goa and Mumbai – the monsoon arrives in the first half. Mumbai in June is loud, flooded in places and genuinely atmospheric.
- Ladakh and the high Himalaya – the rain shadow. Ladakh, Spiti and Zanskar stay dry and clear through the monsoon, which is exactly why June to September is their season.
- The north-east – Meghalaya receives some of the heaviest rainfall on earth; Cherrapunji and Mawsynram are extraordinary and difficult.
- Central India – the tiger reserves close for the monsoon, generally from the end of June to October.
Where June is genuinely good

- Ladakh. The passes are open, the skies are clear, and Leh, Nubra, Pangong and the Markha valley are all in season. This is the strongest single argument for a June trip.
- Spiti and Lahaul – the roads open through June and the valleys are in the rain shadow.
- Kerala for Ayurveda. The monsoon is traditionally considered the best season for treatment, because the humidity is held to open the pores, and the retreat season is built around it.
- The Valley of Flowers, Uttarakhand – usually opens on 1 June, with the best bloom in late July and August.
- Price. The lowest rates of the year in Kerala, Goa and the plains.
What the monsoon is actually like
Worth being accurate about, because it puts people off unnecessarily. In most of India the monsoon means heavy rain for a few hours, often in the afternoon or overnight, and warm, humid, bright conditions in between. It is not six weeks of continuous grey.
The real costs are practical: urban flooding in Mumbai and other cities, landslides closing hill roads in Uttarakhand, Himachal and the Western Ghats, delayed trains and flights, and a sharp rise in mosquito-borne illness – dengue and malaria both increase through the monsoon and after it. Repellent and covered evenings are not optional.
Prices and crowds
Low almost everywhere. Kerala, Goa and the plains are at their annual floor, and foreign visitor numbers are minimal. The exceptions are Ladakh, which is in its peak season, and the hill stations while Indian school holidays run to about the end of June.
