January is the best month to travel across most of India. The north is dry, bright and cool – Delhi around 19°C by day – Rajasthan is at its most comfortable, Goa and Kerala are in peak season, and the Himalaya are clear. The two things to plan around are Republic Day on Tuesday 26 January 2027 and the north Indian winter fog, which disrupts flights and trains more than any weather event in the Indian year.
The fog, and why it matters
From late December through January, a dense fog settles over the Indo-Gangetic plain – Delhi, Agra, Lucknow, Varanasi, Amritsar. It is the single most reliable cause of disruption for winter travellers in India:
- Flights are delayed or diverted, often by hours, most commonly in the early morning.
- Trains run late, sometimes by six hours or more, on the northern network.
- The Taj Mahal can be invisible at sunrise, which is exactly when most people book it.
The fixes are simple: book internal flights for the middle of the day rather than dawn, leave a buffer day before any international departure, and if the Taj is the point of the trip, give yourself two mornings in Agra rather than one.
Weather by region
- Delhi and the north – about 19°C by day and 8°C at night, with almost no rain. Genuinely cold after dark, and colder than visitors expect in buildings without heating.
- Rajasthan – Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer are at their best: warm afternoons, cold desert nights near freezing in Jaisalmer.
- Goa and the Konkan coast – peak season: dry, sunny, around 32°C, and fully booked over New Year.
- Kerala and the south – warm and dry, ideal for the backwaters, Munnar and the coast. Sri Lanka-facing Tamil Nadu is drying out after its north-east monsoon.
- The Himalaya – Shimla, Manali and Gulmarg are under snow; Ladakh is extremely cold and largely closed by road, reachable only by air.
- The north-east – dry and clear; one of the best months for Assam and Meghalaya.

Tuesday 26 January 2027 is Republic Day, marking the constitution coming into force in 1950. The Delhi parade down Kartavya Path is the centrepiece: military units, state tableaux, a flypast, and a chief guest from a foreign government.
Practical notes: tickets are sold in advance through official channels and the route is heavily secured; central Delhi is closed to traffic for the parade and for the full dress rehearsals a few days before; and the Beating Retreat ceremony follows on 29 January. It is also a dry day in much of the country – alcohol sales are suspended on national holidays in many states.

- Makar Sankranti / Pongal, around 14–15 January – the harvest festival, celebrated as Pongal in Tamil Nadu over four days, Uttarayan in Gujarat with a vast kite festival in Ahmedabad, and Lohri in Punjab on the 13th.
- The Jaipur Literature Festival, usually in the second half of January – free to attend with registration, and one of the largest literary events in the world. Jaipur books out for it.
- The Rann Utsav in Gujarat – the white salt desert of Kutch, lit and tented, running through the winter into February.
- Bikaner Camel Festival in Rajasthan, in January.
Prices and crowds
High season, and the most expensive month of the Indian year in Goa, Kerala and Rajasthan. The first week – still New Year – is the peak. From about 10 January, rates ease slightly but stay high until March. Domestic travel spikes around Republic Day and Pongal.

What to pack
More warm clothing than people expect. Delhi and Rajasthan need a proper jacket after dark, and desert nights in Jaisalmer approach freezing. Layer it with light cotton for the daytime and the south.
