It is busy and it is worth it.
Why June works
Istanbul is on the Bosphorus, and that is what saves it in summer. June is warm enough for ferry decks, rooftop bars and dinner outside, without the humid 30°C of August. The days are long – light until around 20:45 – and the whole rhythm of the city moves outdoors.
Practically, June is the month to do the things that do not work in winter:
- The full Bosphorus ferry from Eminonu to Anadolu Kavagi and back, a six-hour round trip that is the best value sightseeing in the city.
- The Princes’ Islands – Buyukada and Heybeliada, car-free, reached by ferry, and at their best before the July crowds.
- Rooftops and terraces in Karakoy, Galata and Beyoglu.
- Swimming, at the Black Sea beaches of Kilyos and Sile, roughly an hour from the centre.
Weather
June averages about 26°C by day and 18°C at night, with roughly 50 mm of rain arriving as occasional thunderstorms. Humidity is moderate and the breeze off the water is constant, which is why it feels better than the same temperature inland.
The one caveat is midday in Sultanahmet, which is open, paved and unshaded. Do the historic peninsula early and move to the water afterwards.
The Istanbul Music Festival
Running through June, the festival stages classical concerts in venues that are the real draw: Hagia Eirene, the Byzantine church inside the Topkapi grounds that is otherwise closed much of the time, along with the Sureyya Opera House in Kadikoy and various palaces and cisterns. Tickets go on sale in spring and the Hagia Eirene performances sell out first.
It is one of the few chances to be inside these buildings at night, which is worth more than the programme.
Prices and crowds
High season. June, May, September and October are the four peak months, and hotel rates in Sultanahmet, Galata and Karakoy reflect it. Cruise ships are in, the major sights need advance timings, and weekend ferries to the Princes’ Islands are packed.
It is still cheaper than July and August in the resorts – but for Istanbul itself, July and August are actually cheaper, because residents leave and demand drops.

Light clothing with a layer for evenings on the water, sun protection for the unshaded peninsula, comfortable shoes for steep cobbles, and modest clothing for mosques – shoulders and knees covered, and a headscarf for women, lent at the door.
