June is the month Spain gets everything right at once. The sea is warm enough to swim, the days are the longest of the year, the summer crowds have not arrived, and the interior has not yet reached the heat that makes July and August difficult. It ends with the fires of San Juan on the night of 23 June, when the whole Spanish coast goes to the beach to burn things and jump over bonfires.
La Noche de San Juan – 23 June
The shortest night of the year is one of the best nights to be in Spain. On Wednesday 23 June 2027, bonfires are lit on beaches from Catalonia round to Galicia, people jump the flames or run into the sea at midnight, and fireworks go off more or less continuously.
- Alicante holds the biggest version, Hogueras de San Juan, with Fallas-style monuments burned on the night of the 24th and a week of celebration around it.
- Barcelona and the Catalan coast fill the beaches with informal fires, cava and coca de Sant Joan; it is loud until dawn.
- A Coruña in Galicia holds one of the largest and most traditional, with sardines grilled on the beach.
- Menorca’s Sant Joan in Ciutadella is completely different again: horses rearing through packed medieval streets, on 23–24 June.
Expect no sleep near a beach, and in many cities a public holiday on 24 June.
Weather: hot inland, perfect on the coast
- Madrid and the interior – around 29°C by day and 17°C at night, and dry: about 21 mm for the month. Hot from mid-June, but the evenings are still comfortable.
- Barcelona and the Mediterranean – about 26°C, dry, with the sea reaching a swimmable 22–23°C.
- Andalucía – hot. Seville and Córdoba regularly exceed 35°C by late June, and inland sightseeing needs an early start.
- The Atlantic north – the best conditions of its year: around 22–24°C, green, with long light evenings. The sea is cold.
- The Balearics – excellent: warm, open and much quieter than in July.
The light is the underrated part. Spain is on Central European Time despite sitting on Greenwich’s longitude, so in late June the sun sets around 21:50 in Madrid and after 22:00 in Galicia. Dinner at 22:00 makes sense here.
The festival month
June is dense with events beyond San Juan – note that Corpus Christi falls unusually early in 2027, on 27 May, because of the early Easter:
- Primavera Sound, Barcelona and Sónar – two of Europe’s biggest music festivals, in late May and mid-June respectively; Barcelona accommodation spikes for both.
- Wine Battle, Haro (Rioja) – 29 June, where several thousand people spray each other with red wine. It is exactly as it sounds.
Beating the heat inland
From mid-June the interior and Andalucía become a morning-and-evening proposition. The Spanish solution is the correct one: sightsee before noon, eat a long lunch, sleep or stay indoors until 18:00, then go out again until midnight. The Alhambra, the Mezquita and the Alcázar all open early for exactly this reason, and evening visits to the Alhambra are worth booking.
Prices and crowds
Rising through the month. The first two weeks of June are still shoulder season and represent the best value of the summer; from about the 20th, and certainly after San Juan, Spanish and European holidays begin and coastal prices climb towards the July peak.
