May is the best all-round month to visit Spain. The weather is warm without being punishing – Madrid around 25°C, Seville in the high twenties – the evenings run past 21:00, and the country stages two of its most beautiful festivals: the Patios de Córdoba in the first fortnight and San Isidro in Madrid on 15 May. The coast is open, the crowds have not arrived, and prices are still below July.
The Patios de Córdoba
For roughly the first two weeks of May, Córdoba opens its private courtyards to the public and competes over them. Whitewashed walls are covered floor to roof in potted geraniums and carnations, fountains run, and residents stand in their doorways explaining the plants to strangers. It is free, it is UNESCO-listed as intangible cultural heritage, and it is one of the genuinely lovely things in Europe.
Practical notes: the patios are concentrated in the San Basilio, Santa Marina and Judería districts; queues build from late morning, so go early or in the evening when they are lit; and Córdoba is small, so book accommodation well ahead for the festival fortnight.
San Isidro, Madrid – 15 May
Madrid’s patron saint’s day, on Saturday 15 May 2027, is a city holiday and the centre of a week of free concerts, chotis dancing in traditional chulapo dress, and a pilgrimage to the San Isidro meadow across the river for a picnic. It is one of the least touristic big celebrations in Spain, which is exactly its appeal.
The San Isidro bullfighting feria at Las Ventas also runs through May and into June and is the most important in the world for the sport – a divisive activity, and one worth knowing is happening either way.
Weather: the sweet spot
- Madrid and the interior – around 25°C by day and 12°C at night, with about 48 mm of rain. Warm days, cool evenings, and the last properly comfortable month before the summer heat.
- Barcelona and the Mediterranean – about 21°C and pleasant, with roughly 42 mm.
- Andalucía – Seville and Córdoba in the high twenties, occasionally into the thirties by late May. Still comfortable in the mornings and evenings.
- The Atlantic north – Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country at their best: green, mild and drier than in winter.
- The Balearics and Canaries – open, warm and quiet, with sea temperatures becoming swimmable towards the end of the month.
Northern Spain in May
This is the argument for May over June or September. The Picos de Europa, the Basque coast, Rioja and Galicia are all at their peak now: green from the winter rain, warm enough for long days outside, and with none of the August crowds. San Sebastián, Bilbao, Santiago and Oviedo are all better in May than in high summer.
Xacobeo 2027 and the Camino
May is the busiest spring month on the Camino de Santiago in any year, and 2027 is a Jacobean Holy Year with record numbers expected. The Camino Francés from Sarria and the Camino Portugués from Tui – the two hundred-kilometre routes that qualify for the Compostela – will be the most congested.
If you are walking in May 2027: book private accommodation weeks ahead, start walking early, and consider the Camino Primitivo, the Camino del Norte or the Vía de la Plata, all of which are quieter and arguably more beautiful.
Prices and crowds
Shoulder-season rates with high-season weather, which is the definition of a good month. The pressure points are the Córdoba patios fortnight, the Feria del Caballo in Jerez, the 1–2 May long weekend and San Isidro week in Madrid. Everything else is moderate.
