May is the month Vietnam splits cleanly in two. The north and the centre are hot and getting wetter; the south is already in its rainy season; and the centre’s beaches – Da Nang, Hoi An, Nha Trang – are in the best stretch of their year. It also opens with Reunification Day on Friday 30 April and Labour Day on Saturday 1 May 2027, one of the two busiest domestic travel weekends in the Vietnamese calendar.
The 30 April – 1 May holiday
Reunification Day (Giai Phong) falls on Friday 30 April 2027 and International Labour Day on Saturday 1 May. Together they create a long weekend that the entire country travels on. The consequences are the same every year:
- Domestic flights and trains sell out and fares rise sharply, particularly to Da Nang, Nha Trang, Phu Quoc and Dalat.
- Beach hotels raise rates and fill with Vietnamese families rather than foreign visitors.
- Ho Chi Minh City holds parades and fireworks around Reunification Day; central districts close to traffic.
Book that weekend early or plan around it. From about 4 May the pressure disappears and May becomes one of the quieter foreign-visitor months of the year.
Weather by region
- Hanoi and the north – hot and humid: highs near 32°C, lows near 25°C, and around 190 mm of rain across roughly seventeen days. The rain arrives as heavy afternoon and evening downpours rather than all-day grey. Humidity is the real issue.
- Sapa and the far north – noticeably cooler than Hanoi, green, and the month the terraces are flooded and planted – the mirror-water season that photographs best.
- Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue – the centre is in its dry season, hot and sunny, with the calmest sea of the year. May is one of the two or three best beach months on this coast.
- Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong – the rainy season has started. Expect a heavy hour in the afternoon and a dry, steamy rest of the day. It rarely stops you doing anything.
- Phu Quoc – the wet season begins; still workable, but no longer the reliable sunshine of February and March.
The climate figures on this page are Hanoi’s. Vietnam runs 1,650 kilometres through three distinct climate zones that are rarely in step, so read the regional list rather than any single number.
Where May actually works best
The centre. If you have one week and you want sun and sea, Da Nang and Hoi An in May are about as good as Vietnam gets: hot days, flat sea, long evenings, and prices still below the July and August domestic peak.
The second answer is the north-west – Sapa, Mu Cang Chai, Ha Giang – where the water-filled terraces are at their most photogenic and the temperature is bearable. Ha Giang riding conditions in May are good, with the caveat that heavy rain can make sections of the loop unpleasant.
The heat, and how to plan the day
May is where Vietnamese heat becomes a planning constraint rather than a detail. Hanoi at 32°C with high humidity and Hue hotter still means:
- Start early. Temples, markets and old quarters before 09:00 are a completely different experience.
- Keep the middle of the day indoors – museums, a long lunch, a coffee, a nap. Vietnam does this itself.
- Expect the rain between roughly 15:00 and 19:00 in the north and south, and carry a light poncho rather than an umbrella.
Prices and crowds
Outside the 30 April weekend, May is genuinely good value. Foreign visitor numbers are low, the summer domestic surge has not begun, and central-coast hotels have not yet reached their July rates. Only the long weekend and the very end of the month push prices up.

Light, loose, quick-drying clothing, strong sun protection, and something for the daily downpour. A light long-sleeved layer is more useful than it sounds: it handles sun, air conditioning and temple dress codes at once. See the Vietnam packing list.
