August is the northern hemisphere's holiday month, which makes it the most expensive and most crowded in Europe and, paradoxically, one of the best in Africa. The Great Migration is in the northern Serengeti and the Mara, Botswana's Okavango flood is at its height, and Namibia is in its driest, clearest stretch. What makes August 2028 different
The Los Angeles Paralympic Games run 15 to 27 August 2028, so southern California has a second high-demand fortnight barely two weeks after the Olympics close. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe occupies most of August and is the largest arts festival in the world - the city roughly doubles in population and accommodation is booked a year out, with prices to match. Ferragosto on 15 August is a public holiday across Italy, Spain and much of Catholic Europe, and the week around it is when Italians themselves take their holidays: coastal resorts are full, and city restaurants and small businesses close entirely. If you want Rome or Milan quiet, mid-August is genuinely the emptiest they get - with the caveat that half of what you wanted to eat at is shut.
1. Northern Serengeti and the Masai Mara
August is the peak of the river-crossing season, with the herds moving between the northern Serengeti and the Mara across the Mara River. Camps in the northern Serengeti and the Mara conservancies are the ones to target, and they are booked nine to twelve months ahead for this month. The dry season also concentrates resident game around water, so predator sightings hold up even on days when the herds have moved. Nights are cold; pack for a genuine chill on early drives.
2. The Okavango Delta, Botswana
The Okavango works backwards to expectation: rain falls in the Angolan highlands months earlier and the flood arrives in the delta in the middle of the dry season. August is when the water is highest and the surrounding land driest, pushing game onto the channels and islands. This is mokoro season. Botswana runs a deliberate high-value, low-volume model, so delta camps are expensive and winter nights on an open vehicle approach freezing.
3. Namibia
August is Namibia at its driest and clearest: almost no cloud, mild days, cold nights, and game at Etosha concentrated around a handful of waterholes so sightings become close to guaranteed. It is also one of the best months anywhere for stargazing - the NamibRand Nature Reserve is a designated International Dark Sky Reserve. Namibia is a driving country; a self-drive with a rooftop tent is a common and sensible way to do it.
4. Edinburgh and Scotland
The Fringe turns Edinburgh into something genuinely unlike any other city for three weeks, with thousands of shows across hundreds of venues and a street programme that runs all day. Accommodation is booked a year ahead at two to three times normal rates; Glasgow is 50 minutes by train and a far cheaper base. If the festival is not the point, the Highlands and the west coast islands are at their warmest and the midges are the only real complaint.
5. Iceland
August is the last month with the highlands fully open and the first with real darkness returning at the end of it, which means a late-August trip can combine F-road driving with the first aurora of the season. Weather is marginally more settled than June and July, and the whale watching season is still running. Prices remain at summer peak until the very end of the month.
6. Los Angeles: the Paralympics
The Paralympic Games from 15 to 27 August use many of the same venues as the Olympics, with a substantial programme in Long Beach. Demand is lower than for the Olympic fortnight but still well above a normal August, and southern California is in its hottest, driest stretch. The same advice applies: stay on a Metro line, not next to a venue, and build long transit times into every day.
7. Bali, Komodo and eastern Indonesia
August is the driest month in Bali and the peak of the Komodo and Raja Ampat liveaboard season, with calm seas and excellent visibility. It is also Bali's busiest month, and the southern traffic corridor is at its worst. The argument for going now is the eastern islands rather than Bali itself - Flores, Komodo and Sumba are all in their best window and none of them is crowded.
8. The Baltic coast and Poland
July and August are the only genuinely warm months on the Baltic, and August is the warmer of the two. Gdansk, Sopot and the Hel Peninsula are where Poles go and almost nobody else does, at prices well below western Europe. The Curonian Spit in Lithuania and the Estonian islands are the same idea with even fewer people. The sea rarely passes 20C, so this is a beach-walking rather than beach-lounging proposition.
How to plan a August 2028 trip
Two habits do most of the work on a month-specific trip. First, book the thing that sells out before the thing that does not: permits, festival accommodation and internal transport go long before flights and hotels do, and a trip is usually shaped by whichever of those you miss.
