May is the best-value month in Europe and it is not a close contest. The Mediterranean reaches the low to mid twenties, the sea starts to be swimmable by the end of the month, wildflowers are still out, and prices sit well below the July and August peak. Elsewhere, Iceland's roads reopen, East Africa runs its cheap green season, and Japan's Golden Week - 29 April to 5 May - is the one week to avoid. The best place to visit in May 2028 is Puglia, where the heat has arrived and the crowds have not.

What makes May 2028 different
Japan's Golden Week runs 29 April to 5 May 2028 and is the single most disruptive domestic travel week in the country - shinkansen seats, hotels and popular ryokan sell out months ahead and prices roughly double. From 6 May the country empties and the weather is excellent, which makes the second and third weeks of May one of the best windows Japan has. In Europe, the Feria de Abril in Seville falls about two weeks after Easter, so in 2028 it lands at the very start of May, and Cordoba's patio festival runs for roughly two weeks in the first half of the month. In East Africa, May is the wettest month of the long rains and therefore the cheapest - camps that cost four figures a night in August can be a third of that, with the trade-off of afternoon storms and some camps closed entirely.
1. Puglia and southern Italy
Puglia in May is the argument against going in August: the same whitewashed towns, the same two coastlines, temperatures in the mid-twenties, and a fraction of the people and the price. The sea is cool but swimmable by the end of the month in the Salento. Masserie - converted fortified farmhouses - are the distinctive place to stay and are far easier to book now than in high summer. Bari and Brindisi both have good low-cost connections.
2. The Greek islands
May gives you the islands green rather than brown, with wildflowers on the hillsides, every ferry route running, and hotels at perhaps half their August rate. Sea temperature climbs through the month and is comfortable for most people by the end of it. This is also the best month for walking - the Samaria Gorge on Crete usually opens from early May, and the Cycladic trail networks on Naxos, Paros and Sifnos are pleasant instead of punishing.
3. Croatia and the Adriatic
The Dalmatian coast in May runs its full ferry schedule without the July traffic. Split, Hvar, Vis and Korcula are all reachable and none of them is overwhelmed. Plitvice and Krka are at their strongest because the spring meltwater is still flowing, and both cap daily visitor numbers in summer but rarely in May. Dubrovnik is the exception - cruise season is already running, so go early morning or late evening.
4. Andalusia, Spain
Seville's Feria de Abril falls at the start of May in 2028 because it follows Easter, and Cordoba's patio festival runs through the first half of the month - courtyards normally closed to the public open up and compete on planting. Temperatures are in the mid to high twenties, which is the last comfortable point before Andalusian summer becomes an endurance event. Granada and the Alhambra are at their best.
5. Iceland
May is the reopening month: the ring road is clear, daylight stretches past 20 hours by the end of it, puffins return to the cliffs at Latrabjarg and the Westman Islands, and prices are well below June to August. The highland F-roads are still closed - those generally open between mid-June and early July - so this is a coastal and ring-road trip. Bring layers; May is bright rather than warm, typically 8-13C.
6. Kenya and Tanzania: the green season
May is the peak of the long rains and therefore the cheapest month on safari by a wide margin. The landscape is green, the light is dramatic, the birding is exceptional and there are very few other vehicles. The costs are real: afternoon storms, some tracks impassable, and a number of seasonal camps closed. It suits repeat visitors and photographers more than first-timers who want guaranteed big-cat sightings.
7. Nepal and Bhutan
May is the second trekking season in the Himalaya - warmer than autumn, with rhododendron forests in flower at altitude and clear mornings before the cloud builds. Haze increases through the month as the monsoon approaches, so views are better in the first half. Bhutan's Paro and Thimphu valleys are at their greenest, and the tourist daily fee makes low-season timing worth checking before you commit.
8. Japan after Golden Week
From 6 May, Japan is one of the best-value destinations in the world for about six weeks. The weather is mild and dry, the blossom crowds have gone, the domestic holiday is over, and the rainy season does not start until early June in most of the country. Kyoto, which is close to unbearable in blossom season, is walkable again. The only caveat is Golden Week itself, which is the first five days of the month.
How to plan a May 2028 trip
Two habits do most of the work on a month-specific trip. First, book the thing that sells out before the thing that does not: permits, festival accommodation and internal transport go long before flights and hotels do, and a trip is usually shaped by whichever of those you miss.
