Best Places to Visit in December 2028: Markets, Snow and Southern Summer

Reviewed September 2026

6 min read·Updated Sep 2026

December divides sharply on either side of Christmas. Up to the 24th, Europe is a market season and prices climb every week; after it, the continent's cities empty and get cheaper while ski resorts and tropical beaches hit their annual peak. The southern hemisphere is in early summer, and tropical Asia and the Caribbean are dry. The first Sunday of Advent is 3 December 2028. The best place to visit in December 2028 is Vienna, where the markets run longer than most and the city works in winter.

What makes December 2028 different

The first Sunday of Advent is 3 December 2028, so most German and Austrian Christmas markets will already be running by the start of the month. The crucial detail is the closing date, not the opening one: German markets, including Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt, close on 24 December, while Strasbourg usually runs a few days past Christmas and Prague, Budapest, Tallinn and Copenhagen's Tivoli continue into early January. If your dates start after Christmas, choose the second group. Christmas Day 2028 falls on a Monday, giving much of Europe a long weekend into Boxing Day and making 23 and 27 December the two heaviest travel days. In the southern hemisphere, Australian and South African school holidays start in mid-December and run through January, which is why Cape Town and the New South Wales coast need booking many months ahead.

1. Vienna and central Europe

Vienna runs one of the longest market seasons in Europe, with the Rathausplatz market opening in mid-November and several markets continuing to 26 December. The city also works in winter in a way many market destinations do not - the museums, the coffee houses and the concert season all carry an afternoon when it is too cold to stand outside. Prague, Budapest and Krakow are the same idea at lower prices, and all three run markets into the new year.

2. Finnish Lapland

December in Lapland is the Santa season, and it is priced accordingly - glass igloos and Santa Claus Village slots for the weeks before Christmas go close to a year ahead. What you get is deep snow, reindeer and husky country, and a few hours of blue twilight rather than daylight. What you do not get is value or the best aurora conditions; late January and February deliver both for a fraction of the price.

3. The Alps

The season opens through early December but low-altitude cover is the least reliable of the winter, and Christmas and New Year are the two most expensive weeks of the year. If December is fixed, choose a high resort with skiing above 2,000m or a glacier, and book somewhere with free cancellation. If the dates are flexible, January delivers better snow at roughly half the price.

4. Patagonia and Chile

December is the start of the southern summer: days are long, the Torres del Paine circuits are open, and the wind has not yet reached its January ferocity. Refugio and campsite bookings for the W and O circuits open months ahead and sell out. Further north, the Chilean Lake District and the Carretera Austral are at their most accessible, and Santiago is warm and dry.

5. Thailand and the Andaman coast

December is the driest, calmest and busiest month on Thailand's west coast. Krabi, Railay and the islands are flat and clear, and the whole country is comfortable. Prices peak between Christmas and mid-January, and minimum stays are common over the holiday period. The Gulf side is on the opposite monsoon and is wetter now, which is why it is cheaper.

6. The Canary Islands

The Canaries are the most reliable winter sun within four hours of most of Europe - low twenties, little rain, and genuinely varied islands. Tenerife has Teide and a proper mountain climate above the coast; La Palma and La Gomera are for walking; Fuerteventura and Lanzarote for wind sports and volcanic landscape. December is high season but far cheaper than the Caribbean for the same temperature.

7. Sydney and eastern Australia

Australian summer, Australian holidays, and the year's most-photographed New Year's Eve on Sydney Harbour. The coastal walks and beaches are the point rather than the city. Book accommodation for the final week of December very early - New Year on the harbour is one of the hardest nights in the world to arrange late, and the good vantage points are ticketed or require a dawn queue.

8. Cape Town and the Western Cape

December is peak South African summer and peak domestic holiday season, so Cape Town, the Garden Route and the winelands are all at their busiest and most expensive. The weather is excellent - hot, dry and long - and the south-easter has begun to blow. If the dates are flexible at all, November or late January give you the same weather at a fraction of the cost.

How to plan a December 2028 trip

Two habits do most of the work on a month-specific trip. First, book the thing that sells out before the thing that does not: permits, festival accommodation and internal transport go long before flights and hotels do, and a trip is usually shaped by whichever of those you miss. Second, check the date-driven items above against their official sources a few weeks before you travel - festival dates, park shuttle schedules and ferry timetables all move, and a page written a year in advance is a starting point, not a guarantee.
