What makes January 2028 different
Three fixed points shape January 2028. Chinese New Year falls on 26 January 2028, beginning the Year of the Earth Monkey and the fifteen-day Spring Festival that ends with the Lantern Festival. Travel across China, Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia becomes very difficult for roughly a week either side, and flights to and within the region price accordingly - book by autumn 2027 or avoid the window entirely. Ramadan begins around 28 January 2028 and runs to late February, which changes opening hours and daytime dining across the Gulf, North Africa, Indonesia and Malaysia; moon sighting can shift the start by a day or two. And the first two weeks are still European ski high season rolling off Christmas - prices fall sharply from about 8 January, which is the single best-value fortnight of the whole winter.
1. Patagonia, Chile and Argentina
January is high summer at the bottom of the world: long days, temperatures in the high teens, and the Torres del Paine W and O circuits open with refugios fully staffed. The trade-off is wind, which in Patagonia is not a detail - sustained gusts over 60 km/h are normal and they decide whether a viewpoint day happens. Book refugio beds and the Paine circuit permits as early as the system opens, usually the previous winter; independent camping is tightly controlled.
2. Thailand: the Andaman coast
The west coast - Krabi, Railay, Phi Phi, Ko Lanta - is in its driest, calmest stretch, with flat seas for island hopping and visibility that makes the limestone karsts worth the crowds. January is peak season and prices reflect it. The counter-move is the Gulf side: Ko Samui and Ko Pha Ngan sit on the opposite monsoon cycle and are wetter now, so if someone offers you a January bargain there, that is why.
3. Finnish Lapland
Once the Christmas rush clears in the first week, Lapland gets better and cheaper at the same time. Snow cover is deeper than in December, the days are lengthening quickly, and the aurora season is at its strongest. Expect -10C to -20C and dress for it properly - the cold is dry and manageable with the right layers, and every operator rents proper thermal suits. Plan three or more nights if the northern lights are the point; no single night is a guarantee.
4. Hokkaido, Japan
The Siberian weather pattern dumps some of the lightest, driest snow on earth on Niseko, Furano and Rusutsu, and January is the deepest month. It is also the busiest, with Australian and Singaporean school holidays overlapping. If you want the snow without the Niseko prices, look at Furano or the Myoko resorts on Honshu. Pair it with Sapporo, where the Snow Festival lands in early February if your dates can stretch.
5. New Zealand
New Zealand's summer peaks in January, which is also when the country takes its own holidays - the first two weeks are the busiest of the year and campsites, Great Walk huts and rental campervans sell out well in advance. Milford, Routeburn and Abel Tasman hut bookings open months ahead. From mid-January the domestic crowd thins while the weather holds, which is the sweet spot.
6. Kerala, India
The Malabar coast is dry, warm and comfortable in January, which makes it the right month for the backwaters, the Western Ghats tea country around Munnar, and the beaches south of Kochi. It is peak season, so houseboat and homestay rates are at their annual high. Kerala also runs a genuinely good rail network, and the Kochi-Alleppey-Varkala-Kovalam line makes a train-based trip easy.
7. Sydney and New South Wales
Australian summer, Australian school holidays, and the best beach weather of the year. Sydney sits in the mid-twenties with occasional heat spikes, and the coastal walks - Bondi to Coogee, the Royal National Park - are the reason to be there rather than the city itself. Note that January is also bushfire season in parts of NSW; check current conditions before committing to inland or Blue Mountains hiking.
8. Cape Town and the Western Cape
Dry, hot and windy - the south-easter that locals call the Cape Doctor blows hardest in January and can close the Table Mountain cableway for days at a time, so treat a summit day as opportunistic rather than scheduled. The winelands around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are heading into harvest, the Cape Point drive is at its best, and the Garden Route east of the city is in full season.
