What makes July 2028 different
Three fixtures, all large. The Los Angeles Olympics run 14 to 30 July 2028, with the Paralympics following from 15 to 27 August. Southern California accommodation, car hire and domestic flights will price at record levels for that fortnight and for several days either side. Euro 2028 ends on 9 July, so the first nine days of the month are still tournament conditions across the UK and Ireland. And the total solar eclipse of 22 July 2028 cuts a 230km-wide path from the Kimberley in Western Australia across the Northern Territory and south-west Queensland into New South Wales, passing directly over Sydney. Maximum totality is 5 minutes 10 seconds near the Drysdale River in Western Australia; Sydney's city centre gets 3 minutes 48 seconds, with the partial phase beginning around 12:40 AEST, totality at about 14:01 and the eclipse ending around 15:14. 1. Los Angeles and southern California
An Olympic host city is a difficult place to be a normal tourist - venues spread from downtown to Long Beach and Inglewood, transport is reconfigured, and prices are set by demand rather than season. If you have tickets, stay near a Metro line rather than near a venue and budget for two hours of travel each way. If you do not, this is the July to visit California outside Los Angeles: the Eastern Sierra, Yosemite's high country and the northern coast all run normally.
2. Sydney and the eclipse path
Totality over a major harbour city is rare enough that this is likely to be the most-watched eclipse in Australian history. Sydney is in winter - roughly 9-17C, often clear - and the eclipse happens in the early afternoon, which helps with both weather and logistics. Cloud is the real risk on the coast; the inland path across western New South Wales and Queensland has better odds and far less competition for beds. Whichever you choose, book years rather than months ahead.
3. Masai Mara, Kenya
July is when the migration reaches the Mara and the Mara River crossings begin, usually from late in the month through September. Nobody can promise a crossing on a given day - the herds move on grass and rain. The decision that matters more is conservancy versus national reserve: the private conservancies cap vehicle numbers and allow off-road and night driving, which the reserve does not. Three nights is the realistic minimum.
4. Norway and Iceland
July is the warmest and most reliable month in both, with everything open and daylight that barely ends. Iceland's highland F-roads are fully open by now, which is the only window for Landmannalaugar and Askja. Norway's fjord country is at its busiest; go north to the Helgeland coast or Lofoten, or inland to Jotunheimen, if crowds are what you are escaping. Both countries are at peak prices.
5. The Canadian Rockies
Banff, Yoho and Jasper reach their short peak in July: high trails clear, the Icefields Parkway at its best, and the lakes at their most improbable colour. It is also the busiest month. The fix is elevation and timing - trailheads empty beyond about two hours of walking, and a 6am start at Lake Louise is a different place from a 10am one. Kananaskis and Mount Robson give the same landscape with a fraction of the traffic.
6. The Swiss Alps
July opens everything: the high passes, the cable cars to the ridges, and the classic walks from the Eiger Trail to the Five Lakes above Zermatt. The lakes - Lucerne, Lugano, Maggiore - are warm enough to swim, which surprises people. The cost lever most visitors miss is the transport pass; doing the maths on a Swiss Travel Pass versus point-to-point tickets changes the budget more than hotel choice does, because the mountain railways are the expensive part.
7. Kyoto and Japan
July in Japan is hot and humid and it is also festival season. Gion Matsuri runs through the whole month in Kyoto, with the big Yamaboko float processions in the middle of July, and it is one of the great urban festivals anywhere. Plan around the heat rather than ignoring it: early mornings, air-conditioned afternoons, evening festivals. Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps are the escape if the humidity is too much.
8. Croatia and Greece
Peak season, peak prices, and the best sailing conditions of the year. If you are chartering, July is the month the Adriatic is designed for. If you are not, this is when Dubrovnik, Hvar and Santorini stop being pleasant - go to the larger, less concentrated islands instead, or inland to Plitvice and Krka where it is cooler and shaded. Book inter-island ferries the day the timetables open.
How to plan a July 2028 trip
