What makes February 2028 different
Mardi Gras on 29 February 2028 is the fixture that reshapes the month. Carnival seasons everywhere run up to it, so Venice's Carnevale, Rio's blocos, New Orleans' parade schedule and the Rhineland's Karneval all peak in the final week of February rather than mid-month. That is unusually late and it compresses demand - accommodation in Venice, New Orleans and Rio for 25 February to 1 March 2028 will be the most expensive nights of their year, and the cheapest way to see any of them is to arrive for the build-up week rather than the finale. Eid al-Fitr falls around 28 February 2028, ending Ramadan, which means a major holiday period across the Gulf, Indonesia and Malaysia in exactly the same week. 1. Venice, Italy
Venetian Carnevale is the one Carnival that rewards a cold, damp February: masked figures against wet stone, and a city that in any other week of winter is close to empty. The public programme runs for roughly two weeks up to Martedi Grasso, which in 2028 is 29 February. Book accommodation for the final weekend a year out or stay on the mainland in Mestre and commute. Outside Carnival week, February is the cheapest and quietest month Venice has.
2. New Orleans, USA
Mardi Gras on 29 February 2028 makes this a leap-day Carnival, which happens roughly once every three decades. The parade season builds for about two weeks beforehand, and the neighbourhood parades in the second week are often better than the finale - less crowded, more local, easier to see. French Quarter hotel rates for the last weekend of February will be at their annual peak; the Garden District and Uptown are more sensible bases.
3. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Brazilian Carnival runs the weekend before Ash Wednesday, so in 2028 it lands right at the end of February. The Sambadrome parades are the televised spectacle; the blocos - free street parties that run through the city from early morning - are what most visitors actually remember. It is hot, humid and very crowded. Prices in Rio for that week are the highest of the year and minimum-stay rules are normal.
4. Sapporo and Hokkaido, Japan
The Sapporo Snow Festival runs for about a week in early February, with large-scale ice and snow sculptures at Odori Park and Susukino. It pairs naturally with a few days at Niseko or Furano, where February snow is nearly as deep as January's and the crowds have thinned after the New Year peak. Book Sapporo accommodation for festival week months ahead - it is the busiest week in the city's year.
5. Tromso and northern Norway
February sits in the strongest part of the aurora season, with long nights, established snow cover and noticeably more daylight than December for doing things in between. Tromso is the easy base - direct flights, a real city, and operators who will drive inland or into Finland to find clear sky. Give yourself at least three nights. Whale watching off the Norwegian coast generally winds down by the end of January, so do not plan a February trip around it.

February is the driest and calmest month of the Maldivian year, at the heart of the north-east monsoon. Visibility for diving and snorkelling is at its best and the sea is flat. It is also the most expensive month, with minimum stays common over the half-term weeks. If the budget matters more than perfect conditions, the shoulder in May or September costs a fraction of this.
7. Ndutu and the southern Serengeti
The wildebeest calving season peaks in late January and February on the short-grass plains around Ndutu, when several hundred thousand calves are born within a few weeks. The predator activity that follows is the most concentrated wildlife spectacle in East Africa and it is far less visited than the July river crossings. Camps here are mobile and move with the herds, so book through an operator who tracks them rather than fixing on a lodge location.
8. Vietnam
February works best in the south and centre - Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta, Hoi An and Nha Trang are dry and warm. Hanoi and Ha Long are cool and often misty, which is atmospheric rather than a problem, but not beach weather. Tet, the Vietnamese new year, follows the same calendar as Chinese New Year, so in 2028 it falls in late January and February is clear of it.
