May is arguably the best month to visit Japan – and it starts with the worst week. Golden Week runs from Thursday 29 April to Wednesday 5 May 2027, when the entire country travels at once; after it, Japan settles into warm, dry, green weather at around 24°C in Tokyo, before the June rains arrive. Plan around the first week and the remaining three are close to perfect.
Golden Week 2027: the dates that matter
Golden Week is a cluster of four national holidays. In 2027 they fall:
- Thursday 29 April – Showa Day.
- Friday 30 April – an ordinary working day.
- Monday 3 May – Constitution Memorial Day.
- Tuesday 4 May – Greenery Day.
- Wednesday 5 May – Children’s Day.
Because only one working day (Friday 30 April) sits between Showa Day and the weekend, a single day of leave buys a seven-day break from 29 April to 5 May, and many people bridge further into a nine-day stretch from around 25 April to 6 May. The practical effects are severe:
- Shinkansen reserved seats sell out weeks ahead; unreserved carriages are standing-room.
- Hotel rates double or worse in Kyoto, Tokyo, Hakone and the hot-spring towns.
- Domestic flights and rental cars book out and expressways jam.
- Popular sights are at their most crowded of the year, including Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera and Nara.
The rule is the same as for New Year: either book everything months in advance and accept the prices, or arrive on about 7 May, when it all evaporates overnight.
Weather: the sweet spot
- Tokyo – about 24°C by day and 15°C at night, with roughly 140 mm of rain across ten days. Warm, comfortable and not yet humid.
- Kyoto and Osaka – similar, around 23°C, with fresh green maples in the temple gardens – the aomomiji season that locals rate alongside the autumn colours.
- The Japan Alps and Nagano – cool and clear; the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route’s snow corridor is open and is one of the great May sights in Japan.
- Hokkaido – its cherry blossom arrives in early May, weeks after the mainland, and the island is cool and bright.
- Okinawa – the exception: its rainy season starts in mid-May, about a month before the mainland’s.
Humidity is the point. May is the last month before tsuyu, the rainy season, which reaches most of Japan around the first week of June. Everything about walking, hiking and temple-going is easier now than it will be for the next four months.
Cherry blossom: only in the north
The mainland sakura season finishes in April. If cherry blossom is the reason for the trip and your dates are in May, Hokkaido is the answer – Sapporo, Hakodate and Matsumae typically bloom in the first half of the month. Aomori’s Hirosaki Castle, at the northern tip of Honshu, is often still in flower at the very start of May.
Festivals
- Kanda Matsuri, Tokyo – one of the three great Shinto festivals of Japan, held in mid-May in odd-numbered years, so 2027 is a full-scale year. Portable shrines are paraded through Nihonbashi and Akihabara.
- Aoi Matsuri, Kyoto – 15 May. The oldest of Kyoto’s three great festivals: a Heian-period procession in court dress from the Imperial Palace to the Kamo shrines. Paid seating is sold; the route is free to watch.
- Sanja Matsuri, Asakusa – the loudest and most crowded of Tokyo’s festivals, on the third weekend of May.
Prices and crowds
Golden Week is one of the three most expensive travel periods of the Japanese year, alongside New Year and Obon. From about 7 May prices fall back to ordinary shoulder-season levels and stay there until the summer. Mid-to-late May is genuinely good value for the quality of the weather – better value than April, which carries the cherry-blossom premium.
