May is the best month to visit Kyoto, once Golden Week is out of the way. The blossom crowds have gone, the maples come into fresh green – aomomiji, which Kyoto rates almost as highly as the autumn colour – the city sits at a comfortable 25°C, and on 15 May the Aoi Matsuri walks a Heian-period court procession from the Imperial Palace to the Kamo shrines.
Golden Week first
Golden Week runs 29 April to 5 May 2027, and Kyoto is one of the places the whole of Japan goes. Trains, hotels and the major temples are at their most crowded of the year, and rates match. Avoid it if you possibly can.
From about 7 May it evaporates, and what follows is the best three weeks in the Kyoto calendar.
Aoi Matsuri, 15 May
The oldest of Kyoto’s three great festivals, dating to the sixth century. On Saturday 15 May 2027, a procession of more than five hundred people in Heian-period court dress, with ox-carts and horses, walks from the Kyoto Imperial Palace to the Shimogamo and Kamigamo shrines, decorated throughout with aoi hollyhock leaves.
It is free to watch along the route; paid grandstand seating is sold at the Palace and Shimogamo for those who want a guaranteed view. The procession starts mid-morning and takes several hours to complete. It is stately rather than raucous – more pageant than party.
Aomomiji: the green maples
Kyoto is famous for autumn maples, and locals will tell you the fresh green in May is just as good. The same temples that are impassable in November are quiet now, and the light through new maple leaves is the specific pleasure:
- Tofuku-ji – the Tsutenkyo bridge over a valley of maples, spectacular in both seasons and empty in May.
- Eikan-do and Nanzen-ji along the eastern hills.
- Rurikoin, whose lacquered table reflects the maples, opens for a limited spring season – check dates and book, as it is ticketed and popular.
- Kibune and Kurama, north of the city and several degrees cooler.

May averages about 25°C by day and 14°C at night, with roughly 150 mm of rain. It is the last comfortable month before the rainy season, which reaches Kyoto in early June, and the humidity is still low enough for all-day walking.
Prices and crowds
Golden Week is one of the three most expensive periods of the Japanese year. From about 7 May, rates fall back to ordinary shoulder levels while the weather stays excellent – which makes mid-to-late May the best value-for-quality window in Kyoto, better than either blossom or autumn season.
